PARIS (AP) ? Unseeded American Varvara Lepchenko's best showing at a Grand Slam tournament ended Monday with a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the French Open's fourth round.
Lepchenko is ranked 63rd and was the last U.S. singles player left in the men's or women's draw at Roland Garros. She picked up surprising victories over 2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone and former No. 1 Jelena Jankovic but couldn't handle Kvitova, who needed only an hour to wrap things up.
Lepchenko never had been beyond the second round in 14 previous Grand Slam tournaments.
The fourth-seeded Kvitova reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros for the first time. Next up is a match against 142nd-ranked qualifier Yaroslava Shvedova, a doubles specialist who upset defending champion Li Na on Monday.
