94Fifty smart basketball proves you've got game, teaches when you don't

Everyday street basketball players (and would-be pros) don't have many tools to quantify their progress. InfoMotion Sports thinks they're owed more than just a pat on the back, so it's bringing its 94Fifty smart basketball to everyday hoop fans. Like the existing model for teams, sensors inside the amateur basketball detect the forces involved in a dribble or shot, relaying details such as the throw angle or power through Bluetooth; Android and iOS apps will be available out of the gate. The stats are for more than just bragging rights, too. InfoMotion's custom software centers on training sessions and competitions, including challenges from seasoned veterans. No matter how hard they play, owners will just have to rest the ball on a Qi wireless charging pad at the end of a session. InfoMotion Sports' $295 asking price will be steep when the 94Fifty arrives in the summer -- but it may be one of the better options for amateurs who want to improve the finer points of their game without donning a uniform.

Groupon shares crumple after dismal outlook, take-rate cut

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Groupon Inc lost a quarter of its market value on Wednesday after the company revealed it began to take a smaller cut of revenue on daily deals during the holidays, sacrificing revenue and profits to attract and keep merchants.

The cut in its "take rate", which some analysts had said was needed to revive flagging interest among merchants in its Internet offers, was a blow to fourth-quarter results. And a sharper-than-expected post-holiday slowdown in its new e-commerce business contributed to a disappointing first-quarter sales forecast.

The stream of bad numbers, which included a surprise loss in the fourth quarter, drove Groupon's stock down 26 percent to $4.43 in after hours trade. Overall, the company has shed more than three-quarters of its value since debuting at $20 in November of 2011.

"This raises questions about how these guys are going to be able to scale the business," said Tom White, an analyst at Macquarie. "The forecast is underwhelming."

Groupon is among a group of consumer-focused Internet startups that went public to much fanfare in 2011 - before losing massive chunks of market value as investors realized they had over-rated their prospects.

Within a year, Groupon had run into problems dealing with European merchants and sustaining interest among users as deals fever receded. In 2012, analysts speculated that Chief Executive Andrew Mason, known for a quirky sense of humor, may have fallen out of favor with the board.

A company spokesman said Mason remained in charge and the CEO addressed analysts on Wednesday's post-results call.

Groupon reported fourth-quarter revenue rose 30 percent to $638.3 million from $492.2 million in the year-ago period. But it slid into the red with a 1 cent per share loss excluding items, versus expectations for a slim profit of 3 cents a share.

It forecast first-quarter revenue of $560 million to $610 million, sharply below the $650 million average estimate of analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Chief Financial Officer Jason Child told Reuters that Groupon began sharing more money from its deals with merchants early in the fourth quarter, to persuade them to come onboard and run an offer for the first time, or work on another.

This was done selectively in the United States and in Europe, he added.

Historically, Groupon has kept about 40 percent of the money generated by daily deals. That declined to about 35 percent in the fourth quarter. Groupon then "fine tuned" take rates later in the quarter and Child said the company expects profitability to improve as a result.

"We are focused on driving growth," he said in an interview. "We will make the investments we feel we need to optimize for growth and merchant profitability."

THE GOODS ON EUROPE

Merchants have complained that Groupon takes too large a cut of online offers.

Groupon executives forecast long-term take rates of 30 percent to 40 percent for the daily deals business, during a conference call with analysts. One of the reasons Groupon reduced take rates was to create more daily deals for a new business called Local Marketplace, which launched in November.

Groupon has mostly focused on sending daily emails to customers offering vouchers for activities in their area. Local Marketplace relies instead on people searching for something to do or buy nearby, such as an oil change or a massage. By the end of the third quarter, before the launch, Groupon had amassed an online store of more than 27,000 deals for the new marketplace.

Analysts have said the move has potential because Groupon's deals may be more likely to show up in Google searches. By the end of 2012, Groupon claimed almost 37,000 active deals running in North America, and many were longer-term offers for Local Marketplace.

For now, Groupon Goods, the company's discounted product sales business, generated a lot of the fourth-quarter revenue growth, though it's seasonally volatile and generates lower margins than daily deals.

Groupon's limp outlook revived fears its business model may be in jeopardy. Chief among their concerns have been intensifying competition in e-commerce, and a struggling European division walloped by the recession there.

Executives warned a turnaround effort there would take time, and signaled that cost cuts are coming for the company's International business.

Groupon is trying to fix it by reducing the size of discounts on deals there and testing faster payments to higher-quality merchants. Technology used to automate its U.S. operations and sales efforts is being rolled out in Europe now.

Kal Raman, chief operating officer, said more than the twice the number of people are needed to handle and process an International division deal, than in the United States.

A Groupon spokesman said there are no "definite" plans for International job cuts, but there were staff reductions in the United States when the company automated.

"That is an enormous opportunity to organize Groupon's operations to be both more efficient," Raman told analysts during the conference call.

Filing shows Icahn holds stake in Herbalife

The divide between billionaire investors Carl Icahn and William Ackman is getting deeper.

A regulatory filing Thursday shows that Icahn holds a 12.98 percent stake in nutritional supplement distributor Herbalife Inc. and intends to have discussions with its management on business and strategic alternatives to enhance shareholder value, including the possibility of going private.

Herbalife has become part a long-running feud between the two activist investors that led to a shouting match on live television last month. The two Wall Street titans traded barbs on CNBC about an old investment deal that ultimately led to a fight over Ackman's position on Herbalife.

Hedge fund manager Ackman said in December that he believes Herbalife is pyramid scheme and he took a short position in the stock. Short-sellers make money when the stock they're betting against declines.

Icahn has said publicly that it was no secret that he neither liked nor respected Ackman and didn't like how he had approached his short position in Herbalife, which he said was "getting a room full of people to bad mouth the company."

He has previously refused to comment on whether he held a position in Herbalife, but many speculated that Icahn bought a stake in a move against his old adversary. He joins another investor, Dan Loeb of Third Point LLC, who previously disclosed an 8.2 percent stake in Herbalife.

Herbalife shares have had a wild ride in the past few months, as it became a flashpoint for a number of high-profile investors. Greenlight Capital's David Einhorn, another prominent Wall Street figure, raised concerns about Herbalife's business in May. And shares dropped sharply following Ackman's comments in December.

The company has disputed Ackman's characterizations, meeting with analysts and investors in January to detail how its business operates and who its customers are. Ackman replied that Herbalife "distorted, mischaracterized, and outright ignored large portions" of his presentation.

Representatives from Icahn's firm, Icahn Capital Management and Ackman's firm, Pershing Square Capital Management, did not immediately comment on Icahn's Herbalife stake.

In an emailed response, a spokeswoman for Herbalife said, "We welcome all parties who see the same value in Herbalife that we do."

Herbalife soared $8.18, or 21.4 percent to $46.22 in Thursday after-hours trading following news of Icahn's holdings.

Milan appeals court convicts 2 Italian spy chiefs

MILAN (AP) ? A Milan appeals court on Tuesday convicted two former Italian spy chiefs for their role in the kidnapping of a terror suspect as part of the CIA's extraordinary rendition program.

The court overturned the acquittals of a lower court and sentenced Nicolo Pollari, the former head of Italian military intelligence, to 10 years, and Marco Mancini, a former deputy and head of counterintelligence, to nine. Three other Italian agents also were convicted and handed six-year sentences. All the convictions can be appealed.

Earlier this month, another Italian appeals court vacated the acquittals and convicted in absentia three Americans, including the former Rome CIA station chief, in the same case. A lower court had acquitted them due to diplomatic immunity.

In all, 26 Americans, most CIA agents, have been convicted in absentia in the 2003 kidnapping of Egyptian Osama Moustafa Hassan Nasr, also known as Abu Omar, with sentences ranging from six to nine years. It is unlikely any will serve time. U.S. officials have never commented on the case.

Italian officials and its secret services have insisted they were neither aware of nor participated in the kidnapping of Nasr, an Egyptian cleric who was transferred to two U.S. bases in Europe before being flown to Egypt where he alleges he was tortured. He has since been released without charge and reportedly remains in Egypt. At the time of his abduction, prosecutors in Milan were investigating Nasr on terrorism-related charges.

Despite acquitting Pollari and Mancini, the lower court judge wrote in his reasoning that it was likely that Italy's military intelligence agency was "aware of" or perhaps even "complicit" in the CIA-led kidnapping. However, the court said it was impossible to convict them because of state secrets restrictions imposed by successive Italian governments and confirmed by Italy's highest court. The government's action blocked any evidence relating to contact with agents from other countries.

Pollari's lawyer, Nicola Madia, said he plans to appeal Tuesday's appeals court conviction. Pollari's legal team has long argued that it has not been able to properly defend him because of constraints placed by the government to protect state secrets.

The Italian trials are the first in the world to assign responsibility in a case involving the CIA's practice of abducting terror suspects and transferring them to third countries that permitted torture. The original trial finished in November 2009, with guilty verdicts against 23 Americans and acquittals of the Italians and three American diplomats. It spawned three appeal court cases.

Fastnacht tradition at Lower Chanceford Township church helps those in need

Chanceford Presbyterian Church has been making the traditional doughnuts and donating to charity for 11 years.

This is the time of year when Sueann Workinger gets organized, recruiting volunteers and buying 50 pounds of granulated sugar and 250 pounds of flour. Reaching into her filing cabinet, she pulls out a handful of worn recipe cards, she said.

They smell delicious.

"It's been the same recipe for a while now," the Chanceford Township resident said. "I guess the smell sticks to the cards."

The recipe at Chanceford Presbyterian Church for fastnachts -- the traditional doughnuts served on Shrove Tuesday -- includes milk and eggs and a heaping helping of potatoes. That's the same as many local kitchens.

But for the last 11 years, the pre-Lent ritual at Chanceford Presbyterian

Jordan Long, 7, helps his mom, Carole Long, make fastnachts Monday at Chanceford Presbyterian Church in Lower Chanceford Township. (YORK DAILY RECORD/SUNDAY NEWS -- PAUL KUEHNEL )

Church in Lower Chanceford Township has also included about a dozen community members coming together to cook.

And the money they raise each year goes to charity.

Betsy Jordan, a former baker, said the idea formed when a church group, the Circle Eight Ladies, went looking for a way to raise money.

"We decided to make a project out of it," she said Monday afternoon, standing by pastry racks cordoned off by Sunday school room dividers and plastic tarps. "It sort of all fell together."

This year, they'll make 280 dozen doughnuts.

For Carole Long, the February ritual has become a way to give back. It's also a good experience for her son, 7-year-old Jordan, she said. On Monday, the boy stood on a chair in the church kitchen, one red shoelace untied and a dusting of flour through his brown hair.

"Yeah, it's pretty fun," he said, using a metal mold to cut the dough.

Betsy Jordan said she can remember making fastnachts as a little girl. She'd reach up to the counter, she said, providing whatever help her mom would allow.

"Just about everyone here has stood in the kitchen and helped their mother make fastnachts," she said. "You have to pass it on."

In recent years, the volunteers

at Chanceford Presbyterian have seen the sweet rewards that can come from that late winter ritual.

Workinger said the money raised from fastnacht sales -- they're $3 a half-dozen; powdered, plain, sugared or glazed -- is used to help locals in need. It might be a fire victim, she said, or it might be kids at Christmas.

A couple hundred dollars can help, she said.

A few years ago, the group even bought a swingset for parish children, a wooden model with a slide that sits not far from a window and a bubbling deep fryer. It's become a popular spot for kids.

Last year, the church group made a donation to hurricane victims in New Jersey, Workinger said. To the uninitiated, perhaps the connection isn't obvious, she said. But it's there.

"I guess in what ways we can," she said, "we're just trying to fill everyone up."

Eagle's Semanko resigns as council president

by KTVB.COM

KTVB.COM

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 11:10 AM

EAGLE -- Eagle City Council President Norm Semanko announced his resignation Tuesday night, citing "the increasing demands" of his personal and professional life.

The resignation is effective March 15, 2013. Councilwoman Mary Defayette was elected to take his place.

Semanko is the Executive Director of the Idaho Water User's Council, serves on several Eagle City boards, and is widely recognized in state politics.

Semanko recently served as chairman of the Idaho Republican Party, where he supported the controversial decision to close Idaho's Republican Primary in 2012.

He subsequently ran for Eagle Mayor in 2012, but lost the race to incumbent Jim Reynolds.

Semanko's ties to the water user's council made headlines in 2011 on the heels of a $161,000 loan he accepted from the quasi-governmental entity -- a controversial, but legal, practice.

In a letter to?the mayor, city council, and others, Semanko outlined his reasoning for giving up the post:

Mayor, fellow Council members, residents of Eagle, City staff and friends,

With the recent death of my father and the increasing demands of my personal and professional life, my priorities have necessarily changed. I apologize for missing the State of the City address today; the first time that I have missed that as a Council member.

As a result of these changed priorities and the demands on my time, my wife and I agreed this past weekend that I will step down as President of the Eagle City Council, effective immediately. Since that office should not remain unoccupied, I plan to make a motion to add the election of a new City Council President to tonight's meeting agenda.

In addition, I hereby resign as a member of the Eagle City Council, effective at the close of business on Friday, March 15. Therefore, barring a special meeting, the March 12 Council meeting will be my last. I wish the Mayor and Council members well in the process of selecting a replacement to fill my seat until the November election. I do hope it will be a collaborative process.

Of course, my resignation will also end my tenure with the Urban Renewal Agency and the Community Infrastructure District boards. Again, barring a special meeting, I will attend one more of each of those board meetings before March 15.

It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the residents of Eagle since my appointment to the City Council on January 8, 2008 and my subsequent election in November, 2009. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to have given something back to the community through public service. As former Interior Secretary Franklin Knight Lane said, "A public office is not a job, it is an opportunity to do something for the public." I hope that I have done some measure of good while occupying the office.

I wish each of you and our city well.

Regards,

Norm Semanko

$10K for an Android Phone

British-based luxury mobile phone maker Vertu has announced its first Android smartphone. And no, as was true for other Vertu phones, you probably can't afford it.

The handmade Vertu Ti starts at $9,600, with a more expensive rose gold-trimmed model that sells for a whopping $19,900.

The hardware is only the best, including a 3.7-inch sapphire crystal screen, an 8-megapixel rear camera capable of 1080p video capture, and a grade 5 titanium casing. The phone is powered by a dual-core 1.7 GHz processor.

But $9,600 won't buy you the latest version of Android; the Ti is launching with Android 4.0 software, which dates from 2011 (the current version is Android 4.2). But Vertu says it has put its own spin on design with a "uniquely tailored" user interface.

In an interview with the BBC, Chief Executive Perry Oosting explained the company's choice to join the Android community, saying, "You need to be part of an ecosystem." Vertu previously made high-quality Nokia phones. The phones will only be available through selected high-end retailers.

Though this is not Vertu's most expensive phone to date, the company claims it is definitely the most powerful. Not that we don't think $10K is worth it, but you can always get the Google's latest Nexus 4, with the latest version of Android and a quad-core processor, for $299.

Have You Ever Left a Job Because You Just Couldn?t Work with Your Boss?

Have You Ever Left a Job Because You Just Couldn’t Work with Your Boss? It's often said that employees leave managers, not companies. I heard it frequently when I worked in a large company, and I heard it again when I was a manager. Sometimes personalities just clash and something has to give. Have you ever gotten along so poorly with a manager that you just couldn't take it anymore?

It's a bit of a catch-22 that often personality differences cause people to leave a job, but when they interview for the next one they're universally encouraged not to mention that personality differences or a bad manager may have been the reason they're looking for something new. Still, it's almost universally acknowledged that many people leave jobs because of bad bosses, not just bad pay or burnout.

Hit the link below for more on the topic, and let us know in the discussions: have you ever quit?even if you told your next boss it was because you wanted something "more challenging"?because you just couldn't work another day with your old boss? What made it difficult for you to get along with them?

China Dresses Down NKorean Ambassador Over Nuclear Test

BEIJING -- China's foreign minister called North Korea's ambassador in for a dressing-down Tuesday and demanded his country's cease making further threats, in a show of Beijing's displeasure over its earstwhile ally's latest nuclear test.

Yang Jiechi delivered a "stern representation" to Ji Jae Ryong and expressed China's "strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition" to Tuesday's test, the ministry said in a statement posted to its website.

"Yang Jiechi demanded that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea side cease talk that further escalates the situation and swiftly return to the correct channel of dialogue and negotiation," the statement said. It did not say if Ji made any response. Calls to the North Korean Embassy rang unanswered Tuesday.

Yang reiterated China's desire for peace and stability on a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula and said issues should be resolved within the framework of long-stalled denuclearization talks involving North Korea, China, the U.S., South Korea, Japan and Russia.

The appeals were contained in an earlier statement from the ministry calling on North Korea to abide by its denuclearization pledge, and not to "take additional actions that could cause the situation to further deteriorate" ? echoing the wording of China's responses to previous North Korean nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009.

Yang's meeting with the ambassador shows China's anger and frustration over North Korea's actions since the ministry calls in foreign diplomats only in cases of extreme pique, such as U.S. arms sales to Taiwan or Japan's nationalization of a disputed island group. However, neither statement pointed to any specific actions Beijing would take in response to Tuesday's nuclear test, the North's third.

The meeting also followed a warning from North Korea that the test was merely its "first response" to what it called U.S. threats, and that it will continue with unspecified "second and third measures of greater intensity" if Washington maintains its hostility.

Despite being the North's biggest source of aid and diplomatic support, Beijing has been reluctant to back more severe measures that could destabilize the North's hardline regime, which serves as a buffer between China and democratic South Korea backed by U.S. forces.

China's patience appears to be wearing thin, however, and Beijing reacted in unusually strong terms to the North's December rocket launch by agreeing to tightened United Nations sanctions on the country, a move that brought criticism from Pyongyang.

China had repeatedly called on the North not to conduct a test, and Pyongyang's decision to proceed anyway will likely strengthen Beijing's arguments that it has little power to influence its neighbor and that harsh actions against the regime will have only a negative effect.

Although Beijing hasn't proposed any concrete plans to punish the North, disgust with Pyongyang's defiance and lack of gratitude is growing in. Tuesday was a public holiday in China, but the nuclear test was widely criticized on the country's popular Twitter-like Weibo microblogging service, with users calling it inhuman and anti-social and urging the government to reconsider its assistance to the regime.

Many found the test offensive because it took place less than 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the Chinese border and came on the third day of the Lunar New Year, when most work stops for family gatherings.

"We're all celebrating the new year, but it feels like someone just tossed a hand grenade at my front door. North Korea is just too crazy," said a Beijing office worker standing outside a downtown McDonald's restaurant, who would give only his surname, Ke.

Cell circuits remember their history: Engineers design new synthetic biology circuits that combine memory and logic

Feb. 11, 2013 ? MIT engineers have created genetic circuits in bacterial cells that not only perform logic functions, but also remember the results, which are encoded in the cell's DNA and passed on for dozens of generations.

The circuits, described in the Feb. 10 online edition of Nature Biotechnology, could be used as long-term environmental sensors, efficient controls for biomanufacturing, or to program stem cells to differentiate into other cell types.

"Almost all of the previous work in synthetic biology that we're aware of has either focused on logic components or on memory modules that just encode memory. We think complex computation will involve combining both logic and memory, and that's why we built this particular framework to do so," says Timothy Lu, an MIT assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science and biological engineering and senior author of the Nature Biotechnology paper.

Lead author of the paper is MIT postdoc Piro Siuti. Undergraduate John Yazbek is also an author.

More than logic

Synthetic biologists use interchangeable genetic parts to design circuits that perform a specific function, such as detecting a chemical in the environment. In that type of circuit, the target chemical would generate a specific response, such as production of green fluorescent protein (GFP).

Circuits can also be designed for any type of Boolean logic function, such as AND gates and OR gates. Using those kinds of gates, circuits can detect multiple inputs. In most of the previously engineered cellular logic circuits, the end product is generated only as long as the original stimuli are present: Once they disappear, the circuit shuts off until another stimulus comes along.

Lu and his colleagues set out to design a circuit that would be irreversibly altered by the original stimulus, creating a permanent memory of the event. To do this, they drew on memory circuits that Lu and colleagues designed in 2009. Those circuits depend on enzymes known as recombinases, which can cut out stretches of DNA, flip them, or insert them. Sequential activation of those enzymes allows the circuits to count events happening inside a cell.

Lu designed the new circuits so that the memory function is built into the logic gate itself. With a typical cellular AND gate, the two necessary inputs activate proteins that together turn on expression of an output gene. However, in the new circuits, the inputs stably alter regions of DNA that control GFP production. These regions, known as promoters, recruit the cellular proteins responsible for transcribing the GFP gene into messenger RNA, which then directs protein assembly.

For example, in one circuit described in the paper, two DNA sequences called terminators are interposed between the promoter and the output gene (GFP, in this case). Each of these terminators inhibits the transcription of the output gene and can be flipped by a different recombinase enzyme, making the terminator inactive.

Each of the circuit's two inputs turns on production of one of the recombinase enzymes needed to flip a terminator. In the absence of either input, GFP production is blocked. If both are present, both terminators are flipped, resulting in their inactivation and subsequent production of GFP.

Once the DNA terminator sequences are flipped, they can't return to their original state -- the memory of the logic gate activation is permanently stored in the DNA sequence. The sequence also gets passed on for at least 90 generations. Scientists wanting to read the cell's history can either measure its GFP output, which will stay on continuously, or if the cell has died, they can retrieve the memory by sequencing its DNA.

Using this design strategy, the researchers can create all two-input logic gates and implement sequential logic systems. "It's really easy to swap things in and out," says Lu, who is also a member of MIT's Synthetic Biology Center. "If you start off with a standard parts library, you can use a one-step reaction to assemble any kind of function that you want."

Long-term memory

Such circuits could also be used to create a type of circuit known as a digital-to-analog converter. This kind of circuit takes digital inputs -- for example, the presence or absence of single chemicals -- and converts them to an analog output, which can be a range of values, such as continuous levels of gene expression.

For example, if the cell has two circuits, each of which expresses GFP at different levels when they are activated by their specific input, those inputs can produce four different analog output levels. Moreover, by measuring how much GFP is produced, the researchers can figure out which of the inputs were present.

That type of circuit could offer better control over the production of cells that generate biofuels, drugs or other useful compounds. Instead of creating circuits that are always on, or using promoters that need continuous inputs to control their output levels, scientists could transiently program the circuit to produce at a certain level. The cells and their progeny would always remember that level, without needing any more information.

Used as environmental sensors, such circuits could also provide very precise long-term memory. "You could have different digital signals you wanted to sense, and just have one analog output that summarizes everything that was happening inside," Lu says.

This platform could also allow scientists to more accurately control the fate of stem cells as they develop into other cell types. Lu is now working on engineering cells to follow sequential development steps, depending on what kinds of inputs they receive from the environment.

Michael Jewett, an assistant professor of chemical and biological engineering at Northwestern University, says the new design represents a "huge advancement in DNA-encoded memory storage."

"I anticipate that the innovations reported here will help to inspire larger synthetic biology efforts that push the limits of engineered biological systems," says Jewett, who was not involved in the research.

The research was funded by the Office of Naval Research and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

Protests In Gaza And 40 European Cities Demand End To ...

More than 300 farmers and activists in Gaza march towards the buffer zone near the border with Israel to demand boycott of Israeli agriculture firms.

- 16 Palestinian agricultural and civil society organisations issue appeal for international civil society to take action against Israeli agriculture companies

- Sale of Israeli fresh produce exports in European supermarkets directly contributes to violations of international law and human rights, new briefing paper shows

Palestinian farming organisations and campaigners in more than 40 European cities today held demonstrations calling for governments and supermarkets to end trade with Israeli agricultural export companies over their role in the destruction of Palestinian agriculture.

Farmers and fishermen in Gaza have been holding demonstrations throughout the week and more than 300 people today marched towards the buffer zone near the border with Israel, where regular attacks and incursions by the Israeli military force farmers to abandon their land or take huge risks to tend to their crops.

?The daily aggression suffered by Palestinian farmers every day must be highlighted to the world, so people can understand the reality of the attacks and the suffering that has continued throughout the recent ?ceasefire?,? explained Mustapha Arafat, a farmer from Zeitoun, Gaza City.

?The boycotts of Israeli agriculture companies are so important as the Israeli occupation has destroyed our farming production and denied us the possibility of exporting our own products. International pressure on Israel is the only way our own economy will be allowed to develop and for us to live normal lives,? he added

All of the main Palestinian farming organisations this morning issued a statement urging international civil society to take action against Israeli agriculture companies.

An accompanying briefing document details how the sale of Israeli fresh produce exports in European supermarkets directly contributes to violations of international law and human rights.

In Europe, many of the 40 protests that took place targeted Mehadrin, a large Israeli export company that supplies citrus fruits, dates and other fresh produce to supermarkets across Europe.

The company operates in illegal Israeli settlements, is involved in the theft of Palestinian land and water and employs Palestinian workers forced to work in illegal settlements in unsafe conditions for as little as ?11 per day.

?Israeli agriculture companies such as Mehadrin and Hadaklaim profit from the siege on Gaza and grow crops for export to European supermarkets in illegal settlements on land from which Palestinian farmers have been forcibly removed,? said Dr. Taha Rifae, director of the grassroots department at the Union of Agricultural Work Committees.

Actions have also been taking place in the West Bank, culminating on a conference on building the boycott of Israeli agriculture on Monday in Salfit.

?Agriculture is a vital part of our economy and national heritage but it is being systematically destroyed and these companies are the primary beneficiaries. By trading with companies such as Mehadrin, European supermarkets are financing the dispossession of Palestinian farmers,? Rifae added.

A large demonstration was held outside Mehadrin?s Swiss distribution centre this afternoon and the company was protested as it participated in a major fresh produce show in Berlin.

In France, activists occupied the customs office in southern French city Montpellier to protest the nearby port of S?te being used to import produce from Israeli companies such as Mehadrin that operate in illegal Israeli settlements. More than 50 campaigners occupied the offices for more than an hour.

Protests were also held at supermarkets in more than 14 other French cities and in Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
In the UK, campaigners picketed more than 35 stores of major supermarket Sainsbury?s as part of a new campaign aimed at pressuring it to cut its ties with Mehadrin and EDOM, another Israeli company operating in settlements.

The UK?s fifth biggest supermarket The Co-Operative Group last year announced it would no longer source products from any supplier that operates in illegal settlements and cut ties to four Israeli companies following pressure from its members.

A British businessman yesterday announced he would resign as chair and sells his shares in Israeli settlement exporter EDOM following concerns raised by campaigners.

?Governments and supermarkets should take action to end trade with companies which is in effect financing Israeli violations of international law. European governments talk tough on settlements but allow supermarkets to support their expansion,? said Rifae.

Police: 4 wounded in Bourbon Street shooting

(AP) ? Four people were shot on the French Quarter's iconic Bourbon Street, sending people running as revelers partied Saturday night amid the countdown to Mardi Gras, police and bystanders said. But the party was back in full force hours later as crowds returned afterward.

Two males and two females were wounded just before 9:30 p.m. time, New Orleans police spokesman Frank B. Robertson said. He reported that one male was in critical condition and had undergone surgery, while the other three were in stable condition. He did not release their ages.

Robertson said detectives were working to identify a suspect and determine a motive. A police statement said the shooting occurred on the French Quarter street, but did not provide the exact location where the shots were fired. He said he had no additional information immediately.

"They're just piecing together what happened," he added. Subsequent messages left with police seeking more information were not immediately returned.

The streets were crawling with bar-hopping throngs taking in the last weekend before Fat Tuesday, the enormous party that engulfs New Orleans each year with parades, gaudy floats and merrymakers tossing trinkets and beads to the crowds.

Bourbon Street street is home to strip clubs, watering holes and second-floor balconies lined by people who throw beads to revelers below each Mardi Gras season. The street often gets so crowded that officers have to control the crowds on horseback.

Patrick Clay, 21, an LSU student, told The Times-Picayune he was standing on the corner of Bourbon Street when suddenly he saw a crowd running and people screaming that there was a shooting.

"Everyone immediately started running and the cops immediately started running toward where people were running from," Clay said. "I was with a group of about seven people and at that point we all just kind of grasped hands and made our way through the crowd as soon as possible."

Afterward, police moved in to investigate. Many revelers said they stayed hunkered down in bars and other establishments until police cleared them to move freely.

WWL-TV reported that police had obtained surveillance video from one of the establishments as part of the investigation.

"We don't know what happened but they shut down the entire block for an hour," Peter Manabani, an employee at the Rat's Hole bar, told AP as loud music thumped in the background. He said the block reopened shortly before midnight and his establishment was again thronged entering the early hours.

Early Sunday there were no signs a shooting had occurred, as revelers had returned to party mode, packing the block anew amid a heavy police presence. Many milled about, wearing beads, drinking and carousing.

"It's scary. We heard about the shooting in the cab ride down here and almost turned around but it's our first Mardi Gras and we wanted to be here," said Ashley Holleran, 19, of Allendale, N.J., visiting with a friend from New York.

Laura Gonzalez, 21, of Baytown, Texas, said it was also her first Mardi Gras and she spent some time in the Fat Catz Bar nearby as police investigated the shooting. She said the bar quickly locked its doors soon after the shooting and wouldn't let anyone in or out while police kept the crime scene clear of throngs.

Asked if it was frightening, she responded: "Not really. We were just locked in a bar and we weren't going to let this one incident wreck our party."

Parades rolled all day Saturday but none on Bourbon Street because the streets are too narrow. One of the biggest Mardi Gras parades, the Krewe of Endymion, rolled down Canal Street and just skirted Bourbon Street a few hours before the shooting. Typically, once the parades end, partygoers head to the French Quarter.

The lifeblood tourism trade is vital to New Orleans and Mardis Gras is one of the city's signature events, along with Jazz Fest and major sporting events such as the recent Super Bowl. Yet decades-old problems persist and New Orleans remains plagued by violent crime, including gun violence that soared after Hurricane Katrina clobbered the city in 2005.

Family Tree Frog: February Photo Collage Festival - Day 10

This is my contribution for Day Ten of the February Photo Collage Festival.

There is nothing on the back of this photo but I'm guessing it was taken sometime around 1945-1947.? And I have no idea where it was taken - somewhere in Australia though.? I'm thinking Bankstown airport or maybe in Queensland at the end of the war.

It is of my uncle, Edwin Oswald Conner - my father's older brother.

I never knew him.? He died in October 1947 at the age of just 21.

He was named after his father - Edwin Conner - and I suppose his uncle - my grandmother's younger brother Oswald Carrett or Ossie. ?

I blogged about Ted's life on my old blog here.?

You can read his service record here

I particularly like the reference from his old school principal at North Newtown Intermediate High who described him as :

"a lad of fine type, of good moral character, of good address and of pleasing personality.? He is well balanced and sensible, he is discreet in his choice of companions and he has enjoyed a good home training."

Having said that, he did lie about his age to get in to the RAAF!

Ted was a draughtsman with Richard Wildridge and Co. of 12 Spring Street Sydney when he enlisted in July 1944 just a month or two shy of 18 years.? He had to bring with him a razor, comb, tooth brush, hair brush, and a shaving brush.? He was to earn 10 shilllings and sixpence a day.? He was 5 foot 8 inches with brown eyes and brown hair.? Off he went to the No. 3 Training School.

There's some interesting info re the training scheme here. ?

Indian Migrant Worker Scam: Scam Uses Rebuild Jobs... | Stuff.co.nz

An Indian fraudster posing as an agent for a New Zealand recruitment company has scammed thousands of dollars from Indian workers hoping to get a job in the Christchurch rebuild.

The conman forged documents, stole the company's logo and promised dozens of Indians a job in Christchurch, working for only $1.50 an hour.

National recruitment agency Advanced Personnel was targeted in the swindle, and operations manager Ryan Densem said he sought legal advice when he realised the severity of the scam.

The company's Christchurch branch began receiving emails last month from men in Agra, about 200 kilometres south of New Delhi, claiming to have offers of employment from Advanced Personnel.

One man, Saravanan Ramachandran, said he had been offered a job as a machinist in Christchurch and emailed the company asking when his job would start and whether his flights were included in the recruitment fee.

Another man, Jitendra Yadav, emailed the company asking to become its "associate" in India.

Yadav works in Agra for Maa Bhagwati Associates, which claims to sell work permits for various countries online.

He claimed he met an Advanced Personnel agent who had promised 20 men jobs in the Christchurch rebuild. The 20 workers had each paid $180 to secure their employment, Yadav wrote.

The agent had given each of the men a letter (provided to The Press) titled Confirmation letter for work in New Zealand.

The Advanced Personnel logo had been copied from its website and pasted into the false letterhead. The letter purported to be signed by the company's Christchurch branch in Papanui Rd.

"This letter to confirm that Mr Saravanan Ramachandran will work in New Zealand. To begin employment with Advanced Personnel Services Ltd to terms and conditions of an approved employment petition field on his behalf. He will be employed as a CNC Machinist at hourly salary 1.5NZD," the letter read.

Densem told both men the letter was a "fraudulent document".

Yadav replied, pleading for help, saying he had already given the agent $3600.

"Sir, he is doing the work, of the help of your companies logo, many candidates give the money. pls sir stop the man, doing not good work," Yadav wrote.

Densem said the company sought legal advice about the forgery but was told it would be a costly exercise trying to chase the con artist from New Zealand.

"I feel so sorry for these guys and we have no control over it. I could hear them pleading in the emails," he said.

Densem was "irritated and angry" that someone was posing as an Advanced Personnel agent.

"Our branch is being seen to rip people off. It's pretty scary."

He believed the scammer had targeted Christchurch for the rebuild and, if the logo from his "small to medium-sized business" had been taken, he would not be surprised if other companies were being hit.

Patrick O'Connor, co-director of Christchurch's Peeto, the Multicultural Learning Centre, said the scam could be "just the tip of the iceberg".

"The word is out about this great city rebuild and the need for thousands of workers. It has spread internationally, and people in vulnerable situations will hear about it and open themselves up to exploitation," he said.

"How many other ruthless exploiters are going to be doing the same thing right across India and in other countries?"

O'Connor urged government officials to send word to New Zealand embassies in developing countries to warn vulnerable people of the threat of exploitation.

IMMIGRATION SEEKS HELP TO STOP SCAMS

The Indian migrant worker scam has raised red flags within the Government.

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) is calling for the public to help identify people involved in similar swindles possibly driven by Christchurch's rebuild.

"It is possible that there will be unscrupulous people who see the Canterbury rebuild as an opportunity to attempt this sort of scam," a spokeswoman said.

"Anyone seeking to work in New Zealand needs to be very careful that they are not being tricked out of their money and falsely offered jobs."

The Advanced Personnel fake employment offers were a "matter of concern" for INZ.

However, taking legal action against the fraudster would be very difficult, given international jurisdictions, she said.

Migrants hoping to work in New Zealand needed to "protect themselves" by checking with companies to ensure any offer of employment was genuine.

It may be common practice for immigration advisers to charge a fee for services, but it was unlawful for prospective workers to pay for a job offer.

"People seeking to work in New Zealand should be aware INZ will decline an application for a work visa where it considers that the employment was offered as a result of payment made by the applicant," she said.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama predicted a tough road ahead as he urged House Democrats on Thursday to stick to their principles on guns, immigration and the economy in legislative fights with Republicans.

He told lawmakers at their annual retreat in suburban Virginia that one fundamental question will guide his second-term policies: Do they give everyone a fair shot at success.

"It won't be smooth. It won't be simple. There will be frustrations. There will be times when you guys are mad at me, and occasionally I'll read about it," Obama said.

He asked fellow Democrats to remember what led them to turn to public office in the first place ? a wish to improve their communities. "If we keep that in mind every single day," he said, "I have no doubt that we will continue the extraordinary progress that we've made already."

The president also tried to offer hope to Democrats tired of being the minority party in the House.

"As a byproduct of doing that good work and keeping that focus, I would expect that Nancy Pelosi is going to be speaker again pretty soon," he said. The California Democrat was speaker until Republicans took control of the chamber in 2010.

Previewing his State of the Union address Tuesday night, Obama mentioned topics such as job creation, education, clean energy and taxes and spending.

He said he still want to achieve a broad budget deal with Republicans. But he brushed off a GOP plan to avoid looming across-the-board spending cuts, saying the plan would not ask enough of the wealthy while putting all the burden on older people and disabled children.

"If that's the choice we've got, I promise you we can win that debate because we're on the right side of this argument," Obama said.

After Obama's brief public remarks, reporters were taken out of the room and the president took lawmakers' questions in private.

Obama met privately for more than two hours with Democratic senators on Wednesday.

The White House said the president spoke briefly, took questions from 10 senators, then spent an hour chatting with them in smaller groups. Obama's spokesman, Jay Carney, said the session was focused on coordinating what the senators are doing with the administration's own efforts to promote Obama's priorities.

Also Wednesday, the Republican-controlled House voted to require that the president submit a budget that balances the federal ledger. The bill was symbolic, meant as a taunt to the president. While it has little chance in the Senate, 26 House Democrats did support it.

In the Senate, Democrats hold the majority and can be far more effective at driving Obama's legislative agenda. But a unified Democratic caucus in the House is critical on issues that might divide Republicans, such as an overhaul of immigration laws or even some fiscal policies.

Carney has said Obama and lawmakers have made "significant progress" toward a bipartisan deal on immigration. The Senate has taken the lead assembling comprehensive legislation, including a path to citizenship for the nation's estimated 11 million illegal immigrants.

On gun control, many Democrats are reluctant to embrace Obama's call for banning certain weapons. But Obama has argued that other proposals, such as universal background checks, have broad public support.

On fiscal issues, Obama wants Congress to pass a short-term package of spending cuts and tax revenue. That would give lawmakers more time to negotiate a broader deficit-reduction deal and avoid deep spending cuts that are set to take effect March 1.
