The Italian Texas BBQ Burger

The last couple of months I?ve been creating recipe using Johnsonville products and then sharing those recipes here with you (hopefully you?ve been enjoying them). The first month I created the Italian Sausage Rigatoni in Tomato Basil Sauce with Peppers and Kale and then last month I created the Whole Wheat Pancake Sausage Muffins.

This month my challenge was to create No Ordinary Burger using either the new Johnsonville Brat or Johnsonville Italian Sausage Patties. Since my store did not carry the Johnsonville Brat Patties, I created my burger using Johnsonville Italian Sausage Patties.

This is definitely a messy burger and not for the faint of heart. It?s big, it?s flavorful and it?s delicious.? But, the best part of this burger is that it?s super simple to make.

The Italian Texas BBQ Burger

Cook time: 20 mins

Total time: 30 mins

Serves: 6

Ingredients

• 6 hamburger buns
• 6 Johnsonville Italian Sausage Patties
• 6 slices thick-cut bacon
• 6 slices cheese (we used Pepper Jack)
• 6 tablespoons of your favorite barbeque sauce
• 12-18 onion rings (2-3 per burger)

Directions

1. Preheat grill to medium-low. Place frozen patties on the grill. Grill 15-18 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 160?F, turning occasionally. While the patties are cooking away on the grill, start cooking the onion rings as directed on the package and fry the bacon until it?s slightly crispy. Drain the excess grease by placing the bacon on a couple sheets of paper towels.
2. To assemble the burger, starting from the bottom up, place cooked Johnsonville Italian Sausage Pattie on bottom hamburger bun. Top with cheese, barbeque sauce, onion rings and finish with the bacon. Place the top hamburger bun on top of the pile of goodness and ENJOY!

If you are a fan of Italian Sausage, then you?ll really appreciate the boldness and full flavor of this burger. It?s definitely a different flavor from the beef burger you?re used to, but I think you?ll like it.

The pictures really do not do this burger justice.? It was after dark when we made these, so the lack of natural lighting really did nothing at all for the pictures. ?But regardless of picture quality, you should definitely give the Johnsonville Italian Sausage Patties a try.

Obama is ahead in swing states, but his lead narrows

(Kristoffer Tripplaar-Pool/Getty Images)President Barack Obama leads Mitt Romney in Florida, Ohio and Virginia, according to new polls of the key 2012 swing states, although Obama's advantage has narrowed in recent months.

Obama leads Romney 48 percent to 44 percent in both Florida and Virginia, according to three new NBC News/Marist polls. In Ohio, the president has a 6-point advantage over Romney, leading his Republican rival 48 percent to 42 percent among registered voters in the state. (The polls have a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.)

Despite the good news, there are signs of danger for the Obama campaign. In March, the same polls found Obama with a 12-point lead over Romney in Ohio and a 17-point lead in Virginia. In January, the poll had Obama besting Romney by 8 points in Florida.

A few key findings benefit Obama. A majority of voters in all three states believe the "worst is behind us" when it comes to the economy, according to the polls?though less than 40 percent of voters think the economy will get better over the next year. Meanwhile, 57 percent of voters in Ohio and Virginia and 56 percent in Florida think Obama "inherited" the struggling economy?a finding that could test Romney's argument that Obama's policies made things worse for the country.

Yet Obama and Romney are statistically tied in all three states when it comes to the question of which candidate would best handle the economy. A plurality of voters in these states believe Romney is the best candidate to handle the national debt.

While Romney's numbers are on the rebound, the polls found one key hurdle for the presumptive Republican nominee: His favorability numbers continue to lag behind Obama's.

In Ohio and Virginia, Obama holds a 10-point advantage or more over Romney when it comes to the percentage of voters who hold a "favorable" impression of the candidate. In Florida, the margin is narrower, but voters are still statistically split on how they view Romney: 45 percent hold a favorable view, compared to 43 percent who hold an unfavorable one.

Small Business Administration head: Access to capital still a challenge

When Karen Mills became head of the Small Business Administration in April 2009, the U.S. was in a recession and a credit crisis. It was hard, if not impossible, for many to borrow money.

Karen Mills has been head of the SBA since April 2009.

It also was a difficult environment for a government agency charged with helping small businesses. But Mills came to the SBA after a career as a venture capitalist ? she was in the business of buying small companies and building them up. Mills, 59, was one of the founders of Solera Capital, a private equity firm in New York. She was also president of MMP Group, which owned companies involved in consumer products, textiles and industrial components.

The SBA has grown significantly under Mills. It had shrunk under the Bush administration, with its work force falling to 2,000 employees from 2,800. There are now 3,000 employees under Mills. In January, the SBA regained its status as a Cabinet-level agency that it lost during the Bush years.

Mills spoke with the Associated Press recently.

Question: What does the SBA see as the greatest challenges that small business owners face?

Answer: Over the past several years, the greatest challenge that small business owners faced was access to capital. Because in October 2008, credit markets froze and small businesses rely on banks for credit and the banks were not lending, particularly to small businesses. At the Small Business Administration, we run a guarantee program in which we have a $90 billion portfolio of guaranteed loans. So we?re one of the most important actors in giving access to capital to small businesses when the market is not functioning. And we were able to step into the market with enhanced loan guarantees.

In the (American) Recovery (and Reinvestment) Act (of 2009), we raised our loan guarantees to 90 percent (of the amount of money borrowed, up from 75 percent to 85 percent) and we reduced or eliminated or the fees. Our (loan) volumes went up and the last fiscal year, we had a record year. We did $30 billion worth of loan guarantees and that is $30 billion into the hands of small businesses. So, we are now back at above 2008 levels at the SBA in terms of loan volume. But loans are not the only thing that small businesses need. It turns out, if you give them the money without also some other tools, it is not as effective. So, a second critical aspect of what we do that small businesses benefit from is mentoring, advice and counseling. And we have data that shows that if you are a small business who has a long-term counselor, you get better sales, you get more longevity, you hire more people.

Q: We?re still hearing that many banks are wary about lending to small businesses. What is your sense of the lending climate?

A: In the last several years, we?ve brought over a thousand community banks back to SBA lending who had not made a loan since 2007. In addition, this year we went back to our bigger banks, our 13 largest lenders and each of them has stepped up and committed a total of $20 billion in incremental small business lending over the next three years. So we have increased activity from both community banks and our larger banks because they realize that the pendulum swung too far and they are refocusing on getting capital into the hands of small businesses.

Q. What do you see as your biggest accomplishment in helping small business?

A. What we have been able to do in addition to really having a record year is bring a comprehensive view of the tools that small businesses need. Instead of operating in silos at the SBA, we see our role as providing a continuum of services to small businesses. So for instance, you might need a counselor and adviser when you start up. Then you might need access to capital and then as you grow you might see an opportunity to do a government contract, which is a program that we oversee. And heaven forbid there?d be a tornado or a hurricane. We?re also there in the event of disasters. So we view ourselves now as helping small businesses do what they do best, which is grow and create jobs.

Q. What has been your biggest challenge?

A. This is an economy now that is ever more dependent on small businesses and in our economy today, we need all of our entrepreneurs, from every community. In this downturn small businesses have really suffered and many sectors of the country and many small business owners have really faced a challenging time. At the SBA, we know that our fastest-growing segments in small business are women-owned small businesses, Hispanic-owned small businesses. Veterans and returning veterans. All of our diverse constituencies in this country need a path to entrepreneurship. Our biggest challenge is to make sure they have access and opportunity, especially where the market is not providing a broad enough path to that access and opportunity. We know that half the people in this country own or work for a small business and that two out of three net new jobs are created by small business. So if we want to make sure the economy continues to grow and that we have competitive advantage around the globe, we have to give all of these small business owners a path to success.

Skywatchers Hot for 'Ring of Fire' Solar Eclipse

A rare solar eclipse is darkening skies from China to Texas today (May 20), and has crowds of eager skywatchers and photographers hoping to see the sun transform into a dazzling "ring of fire."

The so-called annular solar eclipse is not completely blocking the sun (like a total eclipse would). Instead, the moon will cover up to 94 percent of the sun at the eclipse's peak, leaving a bright ring of light ? called an annulus, which means ring-like ? around the moon's disc, NASA scientists said.

"The eclipse will be visible in a narrow path with the moon?s shadow traveling across the Northern Hemisphere," C. Alex Young, a solar physicist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., explained today on his blog The Sun Today.

The shadow begins in East Asia, crosses the Pacific Ocean and ends in the western United States, Young added. While observers on a narrow path will see the full annular solar eclipse, skywatchers? in regions further out will see a partial solar eclipse. [Annular Solar Eclipse of May 20 (A Photo Guide)]

In fact, the solar eclipse is already underway.

It peaked in southern China at about 6:36 p.m. EDT (2236 GMT) and was seen by cameras atop and around Japan's iconic Mt. Fuji, where? a crew from Panasonic was webcasting live, a short while later.

Cameras at the Panasonic Eclipse Live from Fujiyama by Solar Power project's base camp and other sites captured the entire eclipse, which was Japan's first solar eclipse in 25 years. The cameras, all of which were solar powered, showed the moon slowly take a bite out of the moon, then shift from a partial eclipse into the full-blown annular event. About 277,000 people tuned into the webcast for the event, project officials said.

The climax of the eclipse was not visible from the summit of Mt. Fuji, where extreme winds, clouds and snow blocked the view.

"We gave it our best shot," said Jeff Jensen, an MC with the ?Panasonic's Mt. Fuji summit team for the webcast. " We were hoping to get a glimpse, but we just couldn't see it. It was almost a whiteout."

Next, the solar eclipse's shadow path will pass over the northern Pacific Ocean. It is expected to make landfall in southern Oregon and northern California at about 6:23 p.m. PDT (9:23 p.m. EDT/0123 GMT), then gradually cross central Nevada, southern Utah, and northern Arizona before ending in western Texas. ?

U.S. eclipse chasers ready

This is the first widely visible "ring of fire" solar eclipse in the United States in nearly 18 years, according to Young. While the full annular eclipse is only visible along a narrow track, most of the country ?with the exception of the U.S. East Coast ? will see a late afternoon or evening partial solar eclipse.

Some skywatchers and photographers have flocked to some U.S. National Parks (a NASA team is at the Grand Canyon), while others are hoping to find their own picturesque views.

"We couldn't sleep well last night, because you know, we were dreaming of the eclipse already," veteran space photographer Imelda Joson of Boston, Mass., told SPACE.com from outside Page, Ariz.

Joson and her husband Edwin Aguirre are an eclipse-chasing team and SPACE.com contributors. They plan to photograph the solar eclipse from winding Horseshoe Bend canyon outside Page. They've already scouted out their viewing site, which requires a 45-minute hike lugging all their equipment (two tripods, three cameras, four lenses and a solar telescope).

"The weather is fantastic," Joson said. "It's just beautiful."

World's largest solar eclipse party

In Boulder, Colo., astronomers and officials with the University of Colorado have reserved the university's Folsom Field football stadium to welcome 13,000 eager skywatchers hoping to catch a glimpse of the partial solar eclipse. The project, which organizers call the world's largest solar eclipse viewing party, is a partnership by the university 's Fiske Planetarium and Sommers-Baush Observatory.

The event began at 5 p.m. MDT (7 p.m. EDT/2300 GMT) and runs through sunset at 7:50 p.m. MDT (9:50 p.m. EDT/0150 GMT).

Doug Duncan, a University of Colorado astronomer with the planetarium, told SPACE.com the line at the gate was 500 people long at opening time. In the last 10 days, project officials had given out 50,000 solar eclipse glasses for the event.

Eclipse glasses in Boulder are in short supply, said Livescience senior writer Stephanie Pappas, who is covering the Folsom Field eclipse event for SPACE.com.

"They sold out at the planetarium about 20 minutes after it opened today," Pappas said, adding that a local hardware store was also carrying the solar eclipse observing gear. "There was an extremely big crowd at the Fiske Planetarium today at noon. There were hundreds of people there trying to get glasses. Clearly, there's a lot interest."

Eclipse glasses, special solar filters, welder's glass no. 14 and pinhole projectors or cameras are the only safe ways to observe the sun during a solar eclipse. NEVER look directly at the sun with the unaided eye or through a telescope without a solar filter. Severe eye damage can result.

Pollution teams with thunderclouds to warm atmosphere

ScienceDaily (May 19, 2012) ? Pollution is warming the atmosphere through summer thunderstorm clouds, according to a computational study published May 10 in Geophysical Research Letters. How much the warming effect of these clouds offsets the cooling that other clouds provide is not yet clear. To find out, researchers need to incorporate this new-found warming into global climate models.

Pollution strengthens thunderstorm clouds, causing their anvil-shaped tops to spread out high in the atmosphere and capture heat -- especially at night, said lead author and climate researcher Jiwen Fan of the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

"Global climate models don't see this effect because thunderstorm clouds simulated in those models do not include enough detail," said Fan. "The large amount of heat trapped by the pollution-enhanced clouds could potentially impact regional circulation and modify weather systems."

Clouds are one of the most poorly understood components of Earth's climate system. Called deep convective clouds, thunderstorm clouds reflect a lot of the sun's energy back into space, trap heat that rises from the surface, and return evaporated water back to the surface as rain, making them an important part of the climate cycle.

To more realistically model clouds on a small scale, such as in this study, researchers use the physics of temperature, water, gases and aerosols -- tiny particles in the air such as pollution, salt or dust on which cloud droplets form.

In large-scale models that look at regions or the entire globe, researchers substitute a stand-in called a parameterization to account for deep convective clouds. The size of the grid in global models can be a hundred times bigger than an actual thunderhead, making a substitute necessary.

However, thunderheads are complicated, dynamic clouds. Coming up with an accurate parameterization is important but has been difficult due to their dynamic nature.

Inside a thunderstorm cloud, warm air rises in updrafts, pushing tiny aerosols from pollution or other particles upwards. Higher up, water vapor cools and condenses onto the aerosols to form droplets, building the cloud. At the same time, cold air falls, creating a convective cycle. Generally, the top of the cloud spreads out like an anvil.

Previous work showed that when it's not too windy, pollution leads to bigger clouds. This occurs because more pollution particles divide up the available water for droplets, leading to a higher number of smaller droplets that are too small to rain. Instead of raining, the small droplets ride the updrafts higher, where they freeze and absorb more water vapor. Collectively, these events lead to bigger, more vigorous convective clouds that live longer.

Now, researchers from PNNL, Hebrew University in Jerusalem and the University of Maryland took to high-performance computing to study the invigoration effect on a regional scale.

To find out which factors contribute the most to the invigoration, Fan and colleagues set up computer simulations for two different types of storm systems: warm summer thunderstorms in southeastern China and cool, windy frontal systems on the Great Plains of Oklahoma. The data used for the study was collected by different DOE Atmospheric Radiation Measurement facilities.

The simulations had a resolution that was high enough to allow the team to see the clouds develop. The researchers then varied conditions such as wind speed and air pollution.

Fan and colleagues found that for the warm summer thunderstorms, pollution led to stronger storms with larger anvils. Compared to the cloud anvils that developed in clean air, the larger anvils both warmed more -- by trapping more heat -- and cooled more -- by reflecting additional sunlight back to space. On average, however, the warming effect dominated.

The springtime frontal clouds did not have a similarly significant warming effect. Also, increasing the wind speed in the summer clouds dampened the invigoration by aerosols and led to less warming.

This is the first time researchers showed that pollution increased warming by enlarging thunderstorm clouds. The warming was surprisingly strong at the top of the atmosphere during the day when the storms occurred. The pollution-enhanced anvils also trapped more heat at night, leading to warmer nights.

"Those numbers for the warming are very big," said Fan, "but they are calculated only for the exact day when the thunderstorms occur. Over a longer time-scale such as a month or a season, the average amount of warming would be less because those clouds would not appear everyday."

Next, the researchers will look into these effects on longer time scales. They will also try to incorporate the invigoration effect in global climate models.

The research was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science. The data from China were gathered under a bilateral agreement with the China Ministry of Sciences and Technology.
