Mac mini review (2012)

Mac mini review late 2012

October 23rd was mostly the iPad mini's coming out party; an event with one major headliner. But that newborn product didn't enter Apple's ecosystem alone. Amidst the flurry of announcements, there was one other wee hardware relative on hand ready to join in on the launch festivities: a refreshed 2012 Mac mini. Addressing criticisms of last year's model, Apple added Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 ports, upgraded to third-generation Ivy Bridge Core processors to the mix and boosted the standard RAM allotment to 4GB (you can configure it with up to 16 gigs). Perhaps most interestingly, it's now offering a hybrid storage option, the so-called FusionDrive, which combines flash memory with a SATA HDD.

One quirk still remains, though: the product's demographic leanings. Just who is the Mac mini for? Is it the go-anywhere, portable desktop best integrated in yachts, airports, automobiles and living rooms? Or, with a starting price of $599, is it the perfect, low-cost migration assistant (pun intended) for consumers making the switch from a Windows desktop? Follow on to see which hat this not-quite-an-HTPC wears best.

In Defense Of Christina Aguilera's 'Bionic,' As She Readies The ...

Every pop star misfires occasionally. Most dust themselves off and try again without being constantly dogged by their previous failure. For some reason that courtesy isn?t afforded to Christina Aguilera with regards to Bionic. Why? It could have something to do with the diva?s refusal to admit that she got it wrong.

She recently ruffled feathers by telling Billboard that you need to be ?a true fan of music? to fully appreciate her apparently severely-misunderstood opus, which she also declared ?ahead of its time.? The thing is, Christina might have a point. With the release of Lotus around the corner, I?ve been tasked with revisiting the most-maligned pop album in recent memory.

Full disclosure. I?ve been a fan of Xtina?s since ?Genie In A Bottle.? She has one of the best voices in popular music and she continues to evolve as an artist, while some of her contemporaries have been re-recording the same album since 2001. This is the woman who moved away from the bubblegum pop of her debut to the urban-tinged grit of Stripped in the space of one album. An electronic dance LP should have been a no-brainer for Christina, but she dug her own grave before the album was even released in spring 2010 by bragging about Bionic?s revolutionary take on the genre and beefing with Lady Gaga. It created a sense of hostility towards Aguilera, which has never entirely dissipated. People were rooting for the album to fail.

Bionic rubbed me the wrong way upon its release, as well. I did my best to follow my former idol on her experimental journey, but ultimately lost interest. In my own rather unkind review, I admitted that there were indeed ?a couple of very good songs but the vast majority of them cover old ground or imitate other artists in a desperate attempt at innovation?.

The album played like a mixtape of Christina?s favorite artists. The idea of collaborating with people you admire is commendable, but it seemed she got lost in the process. I also wasn?t a fan of the unusually aggressive lyrics or the stomach-churning sexual references. Stripped is such an iconic album because it explored universal themes like loneliness and budding independence. Meanwhile, the only people who could identify with Bionic?s worst cuts are dominatrices and nymphomaniacs.

Two years is a long time between listens, but it turned out to be a surprisingly painless reunion. The album holds up better than expected, and is actually an intriguing ? if somewhat disjointed and often meandering ? collection of songs. Christina?s assertion that she was ahead of the curve is inarguably correct.

The soon-to-bloom Lotus flower was the first mainstream artist to call on Australian singer-songwriter Sia, who has since been courted by everyone from Adam Lambert to Rihanna. It?s unfortunate that their borderline-comatose collab ?You Lost Me? was released as a single. The poignant ?I Am? is a much better example of their artistic marriage, with its poetic and, dare I say it, humble lyrics about being a flawed human being. Almost as good is ?Stronger Than Ever,?which harks back to Sia?s early electro excursions as the voice of Zero 7.

Another rising star that features prominently on the album is Switch, the producer behind Beyonce?s ?Run The World (Girls).? He contributes a couple tracks, while indie-pop hipsters M.I.A., Santigold and Peaches all make an appearance. It?s an impressive line-up, but interestingly, they contribute some of the Bionic?s worst tracks.

No stretch of time will improve duds like ?Elastic Love,? ?Monday Morning? or the grossly underwhelming title track. They don?t sound authentic, as far as Christina is concerned, and she comes across as the world?s greatest karaoke singer, belting out other people?s songs with impressive skill. The best of the bad lot is probably Switch?s ?Bobblehead,? with its staccato beats and chanted lyrics. Iif Nicki Minaj recorded the track today it would be a huge hit.

Speaking of the ?Va Va Voom? singer/rapper, her Xtina collaboration ?Woo Hoo? is even more ridiculous in retrospect. Who thought releasing a club banger about cunnilingus as the second single was a good idea? That kind of jaw-dropping commercial miscalculation is repeated time and again on the tracklist. Everyone except Janet Jackson has realized that spoken interludes are a terrible idea.

It?s truly baffling that some of the best songs are relegated to bonus track status. The two Ladytron productions are examples of an act tailoring their signature sound to suit Christina ? as opposed to the bigger names who took a ?one size fits all? approach. ?Birds Of Prey? is a soaring electronic jam, while electro nursery rhyme ?Little Dreamer? is one of the best songs in dirrty diva?s entire discography. It should have been a single.

Tricky Stewart?s trio of high camp dance-pop productions are the real highlights. ?Desnudate? is Latin-flavored fluff of the highest calibre. The brass is great and the lyrics are sexy without being pornographic. ?Glam? is a throbbing little electro number that has no doubt been the soundtrack to many a drag queen strut-off.? You can just imagine Xtina listening to this every morning as she applies her make-up with a trowel and spray gun.

I originally didn?t have a lot of time for ?Prima Donna,? describing it two years ago as a modern re-hash of ?Fighter.? But is that such a bad thing? Also worth checking out is the Linda Perry-penned ?Lift Me Up?. It?s not quite as anthemic as ?Beautiful? or as raw as ?Hurt,? but it?s a pretty ballad that puts the focus back where it should be: on Christina?s magnificent voice.

So does Aguilera have the last laugh? Not really. Bionic is far from terrible and definitely makes more sense in today?s music market where both genre-bending is not only acceptable, but expected, and EDM is a staple of Top 40 radio. The diva can also be proud of her uncanny knack for picking clever collaborators. But unfortunately, none of those achievements completely compensate for the album?s lack of direction and authenticity. Bionic has been unfairly treated, but it will more likely be remembered as a guilty pleasure than a misunderstood masterpiece.

War photography exhibit debuts in Houston museum

HOUSTON (AP) ? It was a moment Nina Berman did not expect to capture when she entered an Illinois wedding studio in 2006. She knew Tyler Ziegel had been horribly injured, his face mutilated beyond recognition by a suicide bombing in the Iraq War. She knew he was marrying his pretty high school sweetheart, perfect in a white, voluminous dress.

It was their expressions that were surprising.

"People don't think this war has any impact on Americans? Well here it is," Berman says of the image of a somber bride staring blankly, unsmiling at the camera, her war-ravaged groom alongside her, his head down.

"This was even more shocking because we're used to this kind of over-the-top joy that feels a little put on, and then you see this picture where they look like survivors of something really serious," Berman added.

The photograph that won a first place prize in the World Press Photos Award contest will stand out from other battlefield images in an exhibit "WAR/PHOTOGRAPHY: Images of Armed Conflict and Its Aftermath" that debuts Sunday ? Veterans Day ? in the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. From there, the exhibit will travel to The Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington and The Brooklyn Museum in Brooklyn, N.Y.

The exhibit was painstakingly built by co-curators Anne Wilkes Tucker and Will Michels after the museum purchased a print of the famous picture of the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima, taken Feb. 23, 1945, by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal. The curators decided the museum didn't have enough conflict photos, Tucker said, and in 2004, the pair began traveling around the country and the world in search of pictures.

Over nearly eight years and after viewing more than 1 million pictures, Tucker and Michels created an exhibit that includes 480 objects, including photo albums, original magazines and old cameras, by 280 photographers from 26 countries.

Some are well-known ? such as the Rosenthal's picture and another AP photograph, of a naked girl running from a napalm attack during the Vietnam War taken in 1972 by Huynh Cong "Nick" Ut. Others, such as the Incinerated Iraqi, of a man's burned body seen through the shattered windshield of his car, will be new to most viewers.

"The point of all the photographs is that when a conflict occurs, it lingers," Tucker said.

The pictures hang on stark gray walls, and some are in small rooms with warning signs at the entrance designed to allow visitors to decide whether they want to view images that can be brutal in their honesty.

"It's something that we did to that man. Americans did it, we did it intentionally and it's a haunting picture," Michels said of the image of the burned Iraqi that hangs inside one of the rooms.

In some images, such as Don McCullin's picture of a U.S. Marine throwing a grenade at a North Vietnamese soldier in Hue, it is clear the photographer was in danger when immortalizing the moment. Looking at his image, McCullin recalled deciding to travel to Hue instead of Khe Sahn, as he had initially planned.

"It was the best decision I ever made," he said, smiling slightly as he looked at the picture, explaining that he took a risk by standing behind the Marine.

"This hand took a bullet, shattered it. It looked like a cauliflower," he said, pointing to the still-upraised hand that threw the grenade. "So the people he was trying to kill were trying to kill him."

McCullin, who worked at that time for The Sunday Times in London, has covered conflicts all over the world, from Lebanon and Israel to Biafra. Now 77, McCullin says he wonders, still, whether the hundreds of photos he's taken have been worthwhile. At times, he said, he lost faith in what he was doing because when one war ends, another begins.

Yet he believes journalists and photographers must never stop telling about the "waste of man in war."

"After seeing so much of it, I'm tired of thinking, 'Why aren't the people who rule our lives ... getting it?' " McCullin said, adding that he'd like to drag them all into the exhibit for an hour.

Berman didn't see the conflicts unfold. Instead, she waited for the wounded to come home, seeking to tell a story about war's aftermath.

Her project on the wounded developed in 2003. The Iraq War was at its height, and there was still no database, she said, to find names of wounded warriors returning home. So she scoured local newspapers on the Internet.

In 2004 she published a book called "Purple Hearts" that includes photographs taken over nine months of 20 different people. All were photographed at home, not in hospitals where, she said, "there's this expectation that this will all work out fine."

The curators, meanwhile, chose to tell the story objectively ? refusing through the images they chose or the exhibit they prepared to take a pro- or anti-war stance, a decision that has invited criticism and sparked debate.

And maybe, that is the point.

NEW ?GMO INSIDE? CAMPAIGN DENOUNCES CORPORATE DISINFORMATION CAMPAIGN THAT DEFEATED CALIFORNIA?S PROP 37

Groups Launch National Initiative To Help All Americans Take Action On Genetically Engineered Foods
Washington, DC//November 8, 2012// A new coalition, focused on the right to know whether or not foods are genetically engineered, today denounced the millions of dollars? poured into anti-Prop 37 efforts by major corporations. The corporate campaign, financed by agribusiness, food and chemical giants such as Monsanto, Dupont, Dow, Coca Cola and Kellogg?s, was designed to misinform and deceive the public about the cost of labeling.

?Corporations may have misled voters in California about GMOs, but they can?t change the fact that over 90 percent of Americans support the labeling of foods with genetically engineered ingredients,? said Alisa Gravitz, CEO of Green America. ?The GMO Inside campaign will make it possible for all Americans to find GMOs in the food products in their homes and communities, label them, and switch to non-GMO foods instead.? The campaign will show corporations that people will not complacently serve as lab rats for the testing of genetically engineered foods.?
"We are disappointed but not deterred by this defeat," said John W. Roulac, CEO and founder of Nutiva?world?s leading organic superfood brand. "GMO Inside was created to catapult the energy from the fight for Prop 37 to the next level. Our goal is to bring greater awareness to consumers nationwide about the dangers of GMOs and educate on what they can do to make a change."

The GMO Inside campaign launched today on Facebook, http://www.facebook.com/GMOInside; Twitter, http://www.twitter.com/GMOInside; and Pinterest, http://www.pinterest.com/GMOInside, and is signing up supporters at www.GMOinside.org.? GMO Inside steering committee members include Food Democracy Now!, Green America, Institute for Responsible Technology, Foodbabe, Nature?s Path and Nutiva.

The GMO Inside campaign will provide Americans with actions they can take in their homes, grocery stores, and communities to call attention to genetically engineered foods.? It will provide tools and resources for Americans to find the GMOs in a wide-range of products and brands on grocery shelves, and give people organic and non-GMO alternatives. It will also create communities of people who are concerned about GMOs and who will support each others? efforts to label GMOs and avoid products containing them.

ABOUT GMOS
According to the Non GMO Project, http://www.nongmoproject.org, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are plants or animals created through the process of genetic engineering. This experimental technology forces DNA from one species into a different species. The resulting GMOs are unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional breeding.

Almost all commercial GMOs are engineered to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce an insecticide. Despite biotech industry promises, none of the GMO traits currently on the market offer increased yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefit. Meanwhile, a growing body of evidence connects GMOs with health problems, environmental damage and violation of farmers? and consumers? rights.

GMO Inside believes that all U.S. citizens have the right to know what is in the food they eat.? Genetically engineered foods have not been adequately tested for human consumption.? It is unethical put an experimental technology into the food Americans feed their families without providing information on the label that allows Americans to choose whether or not their food contains GMOs. Americans deserve to know if there are GMOs inside.

Nearly 50 countries require labels on GMOs, including Australia, Japan, China, Russia and all of the countries in the European Union.? Many of these countries also have restrictions or bans on GMO food production or sale.? GMO Inside believes we deserve the same level of protection and information as citizens in other nations around the world.? That?s why GMO Inside is launching this campaign to allow people to identify and label food products with GMOs inside.

Getting The Perfect Antivirus Firewall Software System: How To Get ...

In Today?s Society, Defending Your Personal computer Is usually a Requirement

Make no bones about it. There?s nothing at all innocent. Today?s hackers aren?t the pimply-faced teen rebels that you simply might possibly be thinking of. As an alternative, this generation of hackers are grown people who?re far more than likely earning a living by stealing the identities of innocent, law abiding individuals then selling these identities to others who prefer to slip by the method. Computer system security could not be even more vital than it?s now and that?s to introduce it to you. Mass Health Names Six As Designated Integrated Care ...

On Friday, Mass Health announced that the following six companies had been selected to administer the Commonwealth?s Dual Eligible Demonstration Project for individuals eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid:

  • Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts HMO Blue (MCBSMA)
  • Boston Medical Center HealthNet Plan (MBCHP)
  • Commonwealth Care Alliance (CCA)
  • Fallon Total Care, LLC (FTC)
  • Neighborhood Health Plan (NHP)
  • Network Health, LLC

These selected organizations will be responsible for coordinating and delivering health care and some long term supports and services for nearly 110,000 Commonwealth citizens.? Under a little known provision of the Affordable Care Act, the Obama and Patrick Administrations have been working closely over the last two years to design a more efficient and coordinated system that will in the long run produce better outcomes for eligible individuals and save significant dollars.

Under the state?s plan, each ICO will be issued a formal three way contract between Mass Health, the federal government (CMS) and the ICO if the organization is able to pass a Readiness Review that includes partnering with a full array of health care and needed long term supports and service providers to form a full network.? Failure to do so may jeopardize the ICOs ability to be issued a final demonstration contract.
Complicating further steps in establishing a robust provider network are the yet to known rates to be paid to ICOs, and then in turn to health and service providers.? These rates are to be formulated by the federal government?s Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).? Advocates and providers, as well as the ICOs worry that insufficient rates will damage the success of the Demonstration Project.

Speaking on behalf of Mass Health, Deputy Director Robin Callahan has indicated that current rates will likely be a floor for rate construction and should ensure that ICOs are not placed in a position of lowering current reimbursement rates or jeopardizing existing quality service standards.

To assist the Commonwealth in rolling out the Duals Demonstration Project, Mass Health Deputy Director also announced on Friday that the state will create an Implementation Council that will include public, consumer and provider members to monitor the roll out and operation of the Project. Additionally an Ombudsperson will be hired to help facilitate concerns that from consumers and Project stakeholders.
