GOP convention coverage: Are more people watching online than at home?

Though there's little interest in the Republican National Convention from at-home viewers, the social media universe is abuzz with Tweets and mentions about the Republican leadership.

Howling wind, driving rain and potential damage in New Orleans from Hurricane Isaac hasn't yet dampened U.S. Republican convention media coverage, but early TV ratings proved only so-so while many people instead "tuned in" to social networks.

Republican fears that Isaac's battering of the US Gulf Coast would steal the spotlight eased on Wednesday, a day after a key speech by Ann Romney, wife of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, stole the show from New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

But the biggest problem for the Republicans was less the hurricane and more dwindling interest in convention-watching by the general public, experts said.

"Isaac is sucking out a lot of the oxygen but that's because there wasn't much oxygen in the first place," said Sherry Bebitch Jeffe, senior fellow at the University of Southern California's Price School of Public Policy. "Voters and certainly the media are aware these conventions have become hour-long infomercials. There is very little suspense."

Ahead of Tuesday, news of Isaac's path toward the US Gulf Coast revived memories of Hurricane Katrina's destruction seven years ago and threw a spotlight on something the Republican Party would rather forget in its convention week -- the botched relief efforts under George W. Bush, the last Republican president.

But even as some networks moved their anchors from the convention in Tampa to Isaac's landfall in New Orleans to cover both events, those interested in politics tuned in to hear Ann Romney personalize her husband and Christie tackle the Obama White House -- whether on TV or the Internet.

Preliminary data from Nielsen Media Research showed that more than 20 million Americans watched TV coverage of the Republican convention on Tuesday night in the 10 p.m. EDT hour when Ann Romney took the stage. By contrast, 37.6 million people watched Democratic President Barack Obama's most recent State of the Union speech.

About half of the convention's TV audience watched on cable news networks, as Fox News took the lion's share with an average 6.9 million viewers - triple its usual audience. About 11 million watched on broadcast networks NBC, ABC and CBS, which reduced coverage this year to just one hour per night.

Comparisons to the equivalent night in 2008 were not available, but TV audiences for U.S. political conventions have fallen steadily in the last 10 years, with the exception of 2008 when little-known Republican Sarah Palin captured attention.

CONVENTION COVERAGE CHANGES

But the story is different on the Web where, social media experts said, Americans are watching the convention differently from four years ago when Twitter and Facebook were little known.

Thousands of people visited social media sites to follow the convention live across Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and YouTube. Topics such as #GOP2012, #RNC and #Romney were high-trending on Twitter, alongside hashtags for Hurricane Isaac.

Judging by both pundits and tweets, Ann Romney's rousing, high-stakes speech lined with simplistic talk of love was a show-stopper, succeeding in its goal major of connecting Republicans with female voters and humanizing husband Mitt Romney.

"I can't remember a better convention speech by a would-be first lady than Ann Romney delivered," wrote David Frum of The Daily Beast. "Ann Steals the Show" ran the headline on The Huffington Post and CNN delivered the caption "Ann Romney wows the RNC" and quoted reaction as "electric."

An opinion piece in The New York Times said she had less impact when comparing herself to mothers struggling to raise children, but connected more in her speech's second half when speaking realistically about her husband privileged background.

Ann Romney gathered the most Twitter mentions of the night, peaking at a high of 6,195 tweets per minute at the end of her speech when her husband joined her on stage.

The Twitter Political Index measuring tweeters' feeling about a candidate on scale of 1 to 100, 1 being not favorable, saw Ann Romney's score rise from 45 to 83 after the speech.

Facebook and CNN's election insights website also showed a 58 percent increase in users talking about Mitt Romney on Tuesday with the number peaking during Ann Romney's speech.

And traditional media outlets such as the Washington Post, New York Times, CNN and Reuters added to social media coverage, live tweeting, Facebooking, blogging, streaming video, and giving former TV watchers more ways to keep up to date.

The Republican National Committee's own live stream on YouTube has attracted 292,000 views since Monday and has some 3,200 subscribers.

Christie's speech was the second most tweeted-about event at the convention Tuesday, peaking at 6,079 tweets a minute.

Unlike Romney, reactions were more mixed. Fox News praised the speech but included debate about whether the governor, who focused more on his achievements in New Jersey than expected, was hard enough on Obama.

Advocates condemn some Sheriffs' profound distortion of - Arc of '72

August 28, 2012 ? Today, a broad coalition of human rights advocates and legal experts condemned a statement made by the office of Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca Friday that the sheriff would defy the TRUST Act (AB 1081-Ammiano) if enacted, despite the fact that the bill is legally sound, and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) ?hold? requests the bill limits are voluntary. Other Sheriffs, including Sheriff Freitas of Sonoma, Sheriff Gore of San Diego, and Sheriff Sniff of Riverside also suggested in comments to the Los Angeles times that they may take similar actions.

Today?s response comes after about 500 Californians from across the state rallied in Sacramento in support of the bill. It also comes as fresh statistics revealed the number of deportations under the controversial ?Secure? Communities program in the state has now reached 80,000 ? about 7 in 10 of whom either had no convictions or minor offenses.

In a joint statement, the groups, ACLU of California, Asian Law Caucus, California Immigrant Policy Center, Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, DREAM Alliance of Sonoma County, Immigrant Legal Resource Center, MALDEF, San Francisco Organizing Project, and National Day Laborer Organizing Network, remarked:

?To be blunt, Sheriff Baca?s?statement?has zero relationship to reality. ? It is crystal clear that ICE hold requests are just that ? requests. ?In one stunning statement, Sheriff Baca revealed both his fundamental misunderstanding of federal immigration law and his unwillingness to join the rest of us in a good faith policy discussion to reform our broken system. ?In short, Sheriff Baca?s irresponsible statement ?has proven the need for the TRUST Act. The fact is, it is entirely within the legal authority of the state of California to limit how it responds to burdensome ICE hold requests. The sheriffs? recent statements are further proof that immigration enforcement should remain the purview of the federal government.

And it is urgent for California to take action. Each month, thousands of parents, workers, and other Californians who aspire to be citizens are torn from their families due to the most trivial of arrests. They are trapped in our local jails for days, weeks or months after they would otherwise be released. This rogue group of Sheriffs- a vocal minority within the law enforcement community- falsely claims they have no discretion to stop these painful and costly practices. ? They are wrong, and we are only left to speculate why they have pledged to defy California lawmakers.

There is too much at stake for California to allow them to poison the waters. ?This illogical opposition proves the need for Governor Brown to sign the TRUST Act and return the state?s participation in the ?Secure Communities? program back to its original intent.

Additional comments from prominent experts:

Thomas A. Saenz, President and General Counsel, MALDEF:??Any sheriff who fails to exercise discretion with respect to matters that are discretionary under the law engages in an ongoing dereliction of duty. ?Treating ICE detainer requests as mandates is simply a failure to engage in the discretionary decisionmaking that is expected of government leaders. ?It is far better for the state to establish policy on that discretion through the TRUST Act than for local law enforcement to be embroiled in individual immigration enforcement decisions. ?Thus, while avoiding decisionmaking in this area may be desirable for sheriffs, that is only possible with state legislation. ?Under current law without the TRUST Act, these sheriffs are harming the community and neglecting their responsibilities by treating as mandatory what is legally discretionary. ?They are also exposing themselves to possible legal action and liability.?

Hector Villagra,?Executive Director,?ACLU of Southern California???Secure Communities has shattered the relationship between law enforcement and the communities it?s supposed to protect. The TRUST Act restores that bond by stating clearly when local law enforcement should help with immigration enforcement ? in cases of serious crimes ? and when it shouldn?t. Sheriff Baca?s statements show ignorance both of how the TRUST Act works, and the limits of his own power.?

Background: The TRUST Act has captured national attention as a legally permissible alternative to neighboring Arizona?s extreme anti-immigrant measure, SB 1070. The bill would save local resources and rebuild community confidence in law enforcement by limiting limit unfair detentions for deportation purposes in local jails. Specifically, local law enforcement could only submit to burdensome ? and optional ? requests from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain individuals for extra time, at local expense, for deportation, if the individual has been charged or convicted of a serious or violent felony. That such requests are NOT mandatory is well established by the courts and federal regulations themselves.

Lawfare ? The Tallin Manual ? UPDATED

Just back from vacation I get to catch up on fun stuff that I missed while I was away.? At the top of my list is the Tallinn Manual recently released by a distinguished group of NATO experts.? The Manual is a first of its kind effort to codify the international laws applicable to cyber warfare.? The director of the project is the renowned Michael Schmitt of the Naval War College and his diverse group of experts from around the globe has made a great start on this herculean task.??? Here is a taste from the introduction [citations omitted]:

One of the challenges States face in the cyber environment is that the scope and manner of international law?s applicability to cyber operations, whether in offence or defence, has remained unsettled since their advent.? After all, at the time the current international legal norms (whether customary or treaty-based) emerged, cyber technology was not on the horizon.? Consequently, there is a risk that cyber practice may quickly outdistance agreed understandings as to its governing legal regime.

The threshold questions are whether the existing law applies to cyber issues at all, and, if so, how.? Views on the subject range from a full application of the law of armed conflict, along the lines of the International Court of Justice?s pronouncement that it applies to ?any use of force, regardless of the weapons employed?, to strict application of the Permanent Court of International Justice?s pronouncement that acts not forbidden in international law are generally permitted.? Of course, the fact that States lack definitive guidance on the subject does not relieve them of their obligation to comply with applicable international law in their cyber operations.

The community of nations is understandably concerned about this normative ambiguity.? In 2011, the United States set forth its position on the matter in the International Strategy for Cyberspace: ?[t]he development of norms for State conduct in cyberspace does not require a reinvention of customary international law, nor does it render existing international norms obsolete.? Long-standing international norms guiding State behaviour?in times of peace and conflict?also apply in cyberspace?.? Nevertheless, the document acknowledged that the ?unique attributes of networked technology require additional work to clarify how these norms apply and what additional understandings might be necessary to supplement them?.

This project was launched in the hope of bringing some degree of clarity to the complex legal issues surrounding cyber operations, with particular attention paid to those involving the jus ad bellum and the jus in bello.? The result is this ?Tallinn Manual?.

UPDATE:? To my profound consternation, I find that the version I was provided came with the caveat that it was not to be released publicly.? Had I realized that fact I would, of course, not have linked to the document.? I have, as a result, removed the link in this post and I extend my heartfelt apologies to those whose work I may have inadvertently disclosed prematurely.? Anyone who may have downloaded the paper from me is requested to not disseminate it further.

I understand from Prof. Schmitt that an approved version will be available in edited form on the NATO website soon. ? We should all look forward to that, as this is a wonderful piece of work.? Anyone who has an interest in international law, cyber war, or both will, I am sure, find this worth the time and energy.

Neil Armstrong, first man on moon, dies at 82

Apollo 11 commander held true to his engineering roots

Web edition : Monday, August 27th, 2012

Neil Armstrong landed and walked on the moon, the first of just a dozen men to do so. He died in Ohio on August 25, at age 82.

?Houston, Tranquility Base here,? he told NASA?s mission control after piloting the Apollo 11 lunar module to the surface on July 20, 1969. ?The Eagle has landed.?

Six and a half hours later, Armstrong climbed down the spacecraft?s ladder and stood for a moment on one of its saucer-shaped footpads. Then he stepped lightly to the left and into the lunar dust. ?That?s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind,? he said to hundreds of millions of people watching the live television broadcast. (The ?a? in his comment was not audible to those on Earth, but Armstrong later insisted he said it, and a 2006 audio analysis supported him.)

Armstrong?s life was forever defined by that day, but he defined himself foremost as an engineer. He once called himself ?a white-socks, pocket-protector, nerdy engineer ? born under the second law of thermodynamics, steeped in the steam tables, in love with free-body diagrams, transformed by Laplace and propelled by compressible flow.?

Armstrong was born and grew up in Wapakoneta, Ohio, where he worked odd jobs to pay for flying lessons and earned his student pilot?s license on his sixteenth birthday. With a U.S. Navy scholarship he went on to study aeronautical engineering at Purdue University and then earn a master?s in aerospace engineering from the University of Southern California. Armstrong flew 78 combat missions for the Navy during the Korean War.

In 1955 he joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, the predecessor to NASA, as a test pilot. Seven years later he joined NASA?s second astronaut class and got the job of piloting the 1966 Gemini 8 mission, the first rendezvous between two spacecraft. In orbit a thruster malfunctioned, sending the docked spacecraft into a nauseating spin. Armstrong disengaged from the second craft and got Gemini under control for a safe return to Earth.

Those nerves of steel ? and experience flying more than 200 kinds of aircraft ? came in handy many times during Armstrong?s career.

NASA assigned him to be commander of Apollo 11, the first attempted moon landing. While Michael Collins orbited overhead, Armstrong and Edwin ?Buzz? Aldrin descended to the surface in the lunar module. Armstrong, though, saw that the computer was taking them towards a boulder-strewn landing site; he overrode the computer?s instructions and piloted the module down with just seconds of propellant left to spare.

?You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue,? mission control told him. ?We are breathing again. Thanks a lot.?

Armstrong and Aldrin roamed the lunar surface for more than two hours, picking up 46 pounds of rocks and soil and leaving behind a seismometer, an American flag and other mementos. On returning to earth, they and Collins spent three weeks in quarantine in case they had brought back any extraterrestrial microbes.

After Apollo, Armstrong worked at a NASA desk job, then retired from the agency in 1971. He returned to Ohio and taught aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati for eight years, then worked in the aerospace business. Armstrong continued to serve on various policy committees, including NASA?s panel investigating the 1986 explosion of the space shuttle Challenger and a National Academy of Engineering group on the greatest engineering achievements of the 20th century.

After 1972?s Apollo 17 became the last NASA mission to carry moonwalkers, Armstrong wanted the agency to return astronauts to the moon. In 2008, for NASA?s 50th anniversary, he told an audience that ?the goal is far more than just going faster and higher and further. Our goal ? indeed our responsibility ? is to develop new options for future generations: options in expanding human knowledge, exploration, human settlements and resource development, outside in the universe around us.?

NASA currently has no way to get astronauts to the moon even if it wanted to. The agency is developing a heavy-lift rocket with an eye to sending astronauts to Mars someday.

Armstrong died ?following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures,? according to a statement from his family. He had undergone quadruple bypass heart surgery in the weeks before his death.

Armstrong?s family asked the public to ?honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty.? As well as one more thing: ?The next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink.?

11 Of The Most Expensive Private Golf Clubs In New York

With the recession showing no signs of slowing down and our economy struggling to find its footing, the golf industry has found that it is not as untouchable as one might think.

Private clubs throughout the country have been doing all they can in order to fill membership and keep their clubs afloat. Whether it be cutting dues, discounting initiation fees or waiving them altogether, private clubs are doing what they can to stay on top.

However, as difficult as it has been for some, there are a few clubs that are not only doing well but extraordinarily so.

As Golfslope continues to focus on the New York City area, we?ve come across a slew of private clubs within the area that are thriving.

With staggering initiation fees and wait lists a mile long, these clubs show no sign of slowing down. It?s somewhat insane to the average person to think that these prices are somewhat common and actually fairly good deals considering. Would you pay these prices? Do you think it?s worth it? Or would you rather play on a public course with a daily fee? Let us know at our article page.

The respective clubs have not confirmed the initiation fees. These numbers were gathered from research, word of mouth and industry insiders.

Extend Flood Insurance for Homeowners | Condobytes

Homeowners will get an indefinite break on flood insurance through an indefinite extension of the Preferred Risk Policy eligibility for National Flood Insurance.? Some IL homeowners may qualify.

Insurance Net reports that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security?sFederal Emergency Management Agency issued the following news release:

Today, FEMA announced the extension of the Preferred Risk Policy eligibility under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) until further notice, as the Agency completes a study and analysis of the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012, signed into law by President Obama on July 6, 2012. FEMA announced today that until an implementation plan for the new flood insurance law is put into place, customers holding existing preferred risk policies can continue to renew at the lower cost rate, beyond the previously designated two-year period. ?By extending the eligibility period until further notice, home and building owners? preferred risk policies will continue at a lower cost rate,? said FEMA Federal Insurance and Mitigation Associate Administrator, David Miller. ?As we continue to evaluate how best to implement the recent National Flood Insurance Program legislation, we encourage property owners to take advantage of this extended low rate. This way, families and businesses can continue to protect their property financially from one of the most common and costly natural disasters: flooding.?

Beginning with the first renewal effective on or after January 1, 2013, existing preferred risk policies will not be transitioned into full-risk rating. Instead, they will continue to be issued as preferred risk policies at each renewal, until further notice. Additionally, the preferred risk policy discounted rate will be available to property owners and renters whose buildings are found to be in Special Flood Hazard Area following map revisions that became effective on or after October 1, 2008. In order to be eligible for the preferred risk policy, the building must also meet certain loss-history requirements. If there are two claims, or disaster relief payments for flood of $1,000 or more, or three losses of any amount, the structure is ineligible for a preferred risk policy. Premiums for all preferred risk policyholders are being increased an average of 13 percent to maintain a revenue neutral program that also accounts for the expected increase in participation and policies issued under the preferred risk rate. This increased rate remains below the average full-risk premium that would otherwise be incurred among these policy holders. For more information on FEMA?s National Flood Insurance Program, and to identify your flood risk, visit the FEMA floodsmart Website.

Check the flood hazard maps.? If your property was newly mapped into a high-risk flood zone, on or after October 1, 2008, you may be eligible for a low-cost Preferred Risk flood insurance policy as part of the PRP Eligibility Extension program.

New Africa: how a bank executive became Nigeria's leading publisher

Muhtar Bakare

Publisher Muhtar Bakare in Lagos. Photograph: George Osodi/Panos

Muhtar Bakare believes in the quietest of revolutions. He thinks what we read can change us. He has lived and worked in Nigeria all his life and passionately believes everyone has the right to tell their own story.

His own is remarkable. He gave up his position as a bank executive to start an independent publishing house because no one was publishing fiction. Did people shake their heads over the brave folly of his enterprise? "Definitely! But setting up a publishing company was always going to be a challenge. And it still is: we have no distribution network and there is blatant piracy ? infringement of intellectual property. People have to struggle against this, which can inhibit the power to be productive."

But nothing seems to inhibit Bakare. He cites his voracious reading as a spur ? he studied architecture at university and was fascinated by politics and economics. This showed him the world was "ruled by ideas and I was concerned Nigerians were not contributing enough to their production". He became a banker because finance was "part of the way the world was structured" and he understood its influence. But he maintains that, even as he joined, he knew he would one day leave to become a publisher.

His wife still works in banking. They have two children. Did hisshe approve his career move? "I am lucky ? she is my soulmate. Her passion is for finance and she loves what she does. But she understands my need to follow my passion."

Bakare is no impractical idealist. Bakare has a capitalist vision: "Africa must participate in a global marketplace not as aid recipients but as producers on equal terms." It dismays him that "so many brilliant Africans are involved in aid rather than international trade".

In 2004, he started Farafina (a Bambara word that translates as "Africa") a highly regarded online magazine from which his company would grow. (Nowadays, he is managing director of Pearson Nigeria and he no longer runs Farafina, but is still a shareholder and director.) He made contact with writers including Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie who recently championed Bakare in the Guardian for his "humanist, widely read, pan-African" integrity. Purple Hibiscus, her first novel, was his company's first novel too.

He has also published African household names such as Biyi Bandele, Ben Okri and Ngugi wa Thiong'o and less well-known talents such as Segun Afolabi, Tanure Ojaide and Eghosa Imasuen.

Why is it so important for Nigerians to tell their stories? "The history of our country is short and turbulent" and because there are more than 250 ethnic groups in Nigeria, the forging of a national identity is contentious. "They all struggle to be heard. Respect comes from understanding each other's stories. But we shout over each other and forget to listen. If we listened, we would find that what the other person was saying is an echo of what we are saying ourselves."

He believes Africa is often misunderstood outside the continent but adds: "Africa is also not well understood by Africans." His mission is to encourage empathy. He thinks Nigerian education tends to be slanted: "The story of the hunt is written by the hunter. We would feel differently if we heard the lion's side of the story." And would he publish it? "That is what I try to do," he says and laughs. But he is serious too.

August 23, 2012

The technology of computer science and its development mirrors the growing number of newer fields and many sub disciplines. Generally computer science deals with anything that has to do with computers. However, due to the ultra fast, technical development and rapid growth within the last couple of decades, computer science today covers many more subjects than just computers. There are so many sub fields involved like, general computer science, media informatics, technical computer sciences, networking, internet and such like.

The diversified field of Computer technology or more specifically the core discipline of computer science also deals with the sub disciplines like theories of programming languages, artificial intelligence, communication technology, databases, soft-ware engineering and bioinformatics.

Computer Science and this technology are interlinked to every aspect of today's modern life and really provide extended help in finding progressive solutions to everyday problems. It also fills the gaps in our knowledge. Access to information is quite easy due to the fact that internet a progeny of computer technology is providing vast and interactive services to the entire world. The world is in turn becoming a global village, the distances of communication among friends and family having been virtually eliminated. The internet provides web services of different sorts such as, social networking services, chatting services which give real time interaction to users and portals providing free lance business opportunities. Moreover with the help of modern day e-commerce facilities businesses are on an upward curve of success.

Users of internet can locate the web sites of interests in a number of easy ways.
There is a variety of online content available in easy access to the common man; merchants, online banking opportunities, educational and government entities and companies listed with trade and organization names. They can also surf the net with the assistance of various web related search engines, which work magic just like genies!

Advances in the computer technology have made greater efficiencies on the hard ware side as well. Most modern day computers are now general purpose computers and they feature a high degree of programming flexibility.

As computing technology has shifted from a stand alone activity to conduct increasingly over networks, the way computers work has changed as well. Most computers used in business, and many used in the home, no longer operate in the old self contained fashion.

It seems that every one was caught by the speed how millions of people using internet started buying things online. This development posed important challenges and has implications for the technological framework of the internet.
Where, there are so many diversities found in the computer technology, software development stands as an inherently functional enterprise. Software provides the instructions that enable a computer to perform the tasks to serve the user's needs. Soft- wares can actually control anything from the relatively simple operation of a clock to the highly complex operation of an airplane.

In the end, it would suffice to say that the computer science is about exploring the limitations of us the humans and gaining knowledge about expanding our horizons.

"1932 Alvis Speed 20 SA "

1932 Alvis Speed 20 SA

In 1919, T.G. John, a Welshman, naval architect and engineer, founded the company that was to become Alvis Ltd. The company produced high-end automobiles from 1920 to 1967 that were known for innovation, quality craftsmanship, reliability and performance. In 1920, John teamed up with Geoffry de Freville, whose designs for a four-cylinder engine with aluminum pistons and pressure lubrication were far ahead of the times.

Innovations in an Innovative Era

Throughout the 1920s, the marque produced a series of automotive innovations that quickly cemented the reputation of the company. Examples include front-wheel drive, independent suspension, the all-synchromesh gearbox, servo-assisted brakes and overhead camshafts. De Freville?s 10/30 side-valve, aluminum cylinder engines were continually upgraded throughout this period, evolving into the overhead valve 12/50 engines that became the basis for the highly successful 12/50, 12/80 and Silver Eagle sports cars of the late 1920s.

In 1927, the six-cylinder, 14.75 engines were introduced by the company. These engines became the basis for a line of luxury and sports cars that were produced from the 1930s up until the outbreak of World War II. These models included the 12/74, introduced in 1928, the Firefly and the Crested Eagle introduced in 1933, and the Silver Crest that came out in 1937. The most famous model to use the six-cylinder, 14.75 engines was the low-slung sports car, first introduced in 1932 as the Speed 20.

The 1932 Speed 20 SA

The Speed 20 SA was introduced in 1932, as an all-new design that focused on performance and delivered. The engine used for the platform was the six-cylinder, 14.75 used in earlier models. It was fitted with three SU carburetors and heavily modified to deliver about 87 horsepower. A four-speed, manual crash gearbox was mounted as a unit with the engine. (The famous synchromesh gearbox would be introduced the following year.)

One improvement was the new double-drop chassis that lowered the center-of-gravity of the car and extended the wheelbase to 10?3?. The front and rear suspension used half-elliptic leaf springs. Another noteworthy feature included a chassis fitted with an advanced centralized lubrication system that delivered oil to moving parts in the suspension system through a network of piping. The mechanically operated brakes used massive 14? drums to provide plenty of stopping power from the car?s maximum speed of 90 miles per hour.

Like many high-end cars of the era, the bodywork and interior of the cars were finished by outside coachbuilders. Many of the Speed 20 SAs were configured as four-door saloons and tourers by such prestigious coachbuilders as Charlesworth and Cross and Ellis. Others were configured as two-door touring or sports saloons, or drophead coupes by Van den Plas, a well-known London coachbuilder.

About 400 of the SA models were produced. Today they are highly prized by collectors.

Heineken earnings hit overshadows Tiger bid success

SINGAPORE/BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Higher input costs and weak European sales depressed Heineken NV's earnings in the first six months, overshadowing its promise of a better second half and a minor success in its battle for control of Asia's Tiger beer.

The world's third-largest brewer suffered a 4 percent decline in first-half net profit before one-offs on a like-for-like basis, against market expectations of growth, hit by rising production costs, weakness in Europe and investments in Africa.

Heineken said beer drinking would stay subdued in western Europe in the second half, underlining its need for scale in faster-growing markets such as southeast Asia where it is battling for control of Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) .

Heineken raised its stake in APB to about 44.6 percent after buying shares which sources said were from Singapore's Temasek Holdings and other shareholders, underlining its resolve to fend off rival Thai Beverage .

The Dutch company, a co-owner of APB since 1931, is seeking control of the Singapore-listed company to gain a larger slice of one of the last beer markets that is still growing rapidly and is not yet dominated by a global brewing group.

Heineken Chief Executive Jean-Francois van Boxmeer told a conference call on Wednesday that the Heineken and Tiger brands had taken off in southeast Asia in the past 15 years.

"This is the most rapidly growing area with the strongest demographics and strongest economic growth in Asia and we deem that a strategic interest for us," he said.

Big brewers have sought to boost volumes in emerging markets and steer developed world drinkers to pricier beer. Heineken is among the most reliant on the stagnant European market, which contributed 60 percent of its revenue and 40 percent of operating profit in the first half.

Heineken's first-half operating earnings fell in both western and eastern Europe, but grew in other regions. Cold, wet weather in northern Europe meant far lower sales of thirst-quenching lager.

Group net profit before one-offs dropped to 705 million euros, at the bottom of the 703-789 million euro range in a Reuters poll of eight banks and brokerages, for which the average was 737 million.

TIGER FIGHT

Heineken shares were 2.5 percent lower at 11:10 a.m. British time, making them among the weakest performers in the FTSEurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> of leading European stocks.

The company pushed into Mexico in 2010 and has now set its sights on control of markets including Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, even if it was only stirred into action by Thai billionaire Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi.

Charoen, owner of Heineken rival Thai Beverage , has in the past month built up a stake of 26.4 percent in Fraser and Neave (F&N) , the Singapore holding company whose joint venture with Heineken controls APB.

Heineken has bid S$7.94 billion ($6.4 billion) for F&N and for all of the APB shares held by others. F&N's board has approved its $53 per share bid, but must win backing from shareholders, which also include Japan's Kirin .

The Dutch brewer also has to prevent Kindest Place, owned by Charoen's son-in-law, from building its 8.6 percent stake in APB to 10 percent, a level that could prevent Heineken from delisting APB.

By buying Temasek's holding, Heineken has kept it out of the hands of its Thai rivals.

Buying Temasek's small stake is just another step Heineken is taking to strengthen its grip on APB and to "prevent the Thais from throwing another spanner into their plan," said Andy Sim, an analyst at DBS Vickers in Singapore.

The $53 per share offer announced by Heineken on Friday has placed the spotlight back onto Charoen, Thailand's second-richest man, and Kindest Place, which offered to buy F&N's direct stake of 7.3 percent in APB for S$55 a share.

APB shares were flat at S$53 while F&N shares fell 1 percent to S$8.27.

Self Improvement ? Growing Your Internet Business ? Learn How to ...

Every Internet marketer has one primary goal: to get their business as much on auto pilot as possible so that they don?t have to work as much but can still get real results. In the beginning, setting up a web business is much harder than it looks because you have to tend to all of the little details yourself. This is the time when having good time management skills is extremely important because if you can accomplish more in less time you?ll have more time to work on planning and strategizing.

Every single step that you take towards getting this part right will help you improve your overall approach. In this article we will teach you a few of the things that you can do immediately to help yourself accomplish more in less time.

Take a look at your calendar to see if there might be social events or even professional meetings that can be sacrificed to get all of the work done. Sometimes you need to get out of your comfort zone so that you can accomplish more; Internet marketing is often a very difficult business model to run and that?s why you need to keep a close eye on your calendar so that you will know when you are spending too much time being social and ignoring the things that you need to do. It is going to be startling how much time can be spent on the things that, in the long run, do not actually matter.

Become an email ninja; you need to control your inbox, it should not control you. If you feel like your email inbox is starting to control you, you should know that your productivity is going to tank. All of the steps you take toward controlling your email will go a long way toward helping you get as much as you can from the work you have to do. The emails you wait for and that need to be addressed immediately deserve the highest priority. Anything beyond that deserves the backseat.

In your quest to get more done in less time, sometimes you will need external help. Knowing whom to approach for help and getting the right kind of assistance when required will give you the needed boost. Once in a while it?s good to figure things out on your own because you can learn from the experience but there are going to be times when you are a lot better off finding help instead of just wasting your own time. Try to make every minute you spend in your workspace productive; if you have issues finding someone who can help you there?s nothing wrong with that.

All Internet marketers dream of building a business that earns them six figures while running on auto pilot. The first thing that you need to do, if you want your business to actually get to that point, you need to make sure that you perfectly manage your time. This will allow you to achieve more of your goals in a lesser amount of time. While there are lots of things that can keep you from being productive once you start putting all of those tips into action you can see for yourself how easily things will fall into place and save lots of time. how to get a boy to like you

Tattoo After Care: Taking Care Of Your Tattoo ! | City-News Directory

Tattoos are beautiful body art that will last a lifetime. They are made by inserting irremovable ink into the dermis layer of the skin to change the pigment. Proper aftercare has to be provided after tattooing, to achieve the best healing, resulting in the most attractive tattoo with fewer complications in future. Tattoo aftercare varies from person to person and artist to artist. Usually your tattoo artist will provide instructions on, ?how to take care of your new tattoo??. But, it?s better to be prepared of these instructions before getting your tattoo. Tattoo aftercare is simple, if you properly follow the instructions.
Tattoo aftercare:

Usually the tattoo artists, cover your tattoo with a bandage, cling wrap or gauze. You have to keep your new tattoo covered for two hours or overnight, depending on the size of the tattoo or the advice of your tattoo artist. This is done to prevent any bacteria entering into the skin and to avoid the blood from clotting. When it?s time to remove the bandage, do so slowly and gently with clean hands. If the bandage sticks, stop peeling and pour cool water between the bandage and skin. Wait for a few minutes and start peeling again. Remember not to hurry while taking the bandage. Do it slowly and gently, to avoid peeling your skin or parts of the tattoo. Otherwise it will create a dull gap in your beautiful tattoo.

After removing the bandage, gently wash the area with warm water. Use a mild anti-bacterial soap free of deodorants or other additives. Rub the soap on the tattoo gently with your fingers. Make sure that you remove all traces of blood from it. After cleaning, pout cold water on the tattoo for a few minutes. The cold water will help the tattoo heal quickly, as it tightens the pores. Cold water also helps the color to set in. Now, gently pat the tattoo dry with a clean, dry cloth. Don?t rub it dry.

Now, apply a very thin layer of antibacterial ointment like Neosporin or Bacitraycin, with your fingers. Do not apply thick layer of ointment, otherwise your skin cannot breath. A thin layer is enough to cover the tattoo, depending on its size.

Avoid hot tubs, pool water, or soaking in the tub during the first two weeks. This is to avoid the fading of the ink due to excess hydration and to prevent the exposure to bacteria.

You have to keep your tattoo clean in order to avoid bacterial infection. Wash the tattoo at least twice a day for the first week. Apply ointment on the tattoo 4-6 times for the first three days. It will keep the tattoo moisturized and prevent its fading.

After 3-4 days of using ointment, switch to moisturizing lotions like Lubriderm and Eucerin.

The tattoo will bleed ink for the first few days after tattooing. So wear something that you doesn?t mind having a little ink on.

Do not re-bandage a tattoo. Never use petroleum-based products or products with extra additives like skin softeners or scents for the first two weeks. Try to use water-based products on your tattoo.

Try to stay away from sun for at least two or three weeks. Too much exposure to sun will result in the fading of the color of the tattoo. After two weeks, you can lie in the sun or go to a tanner. But, remember to apply a thin layer of SPF 25 or other sunscreen lotions over the tattoo.

Like all other wounds, your tattoo will also itch during the healing process. Do not scratch on your tattoo. It will remove scabs of tattoo from your skin, which will turn it ugly. Apply lotion on the tattoo to relieve itching.

By following these simple instructions, it?s sure that you can have a great tattoo on you without any complications.

After your tattoo has been healed you can return to your normal life. But, remember to use sun screen lotions when you get out. Try to cover your tattoo, if you are going to the tanning bed. Apply skin lotions to give your tattoo a better look.
