Student breaks ankle on mountain, video diary goes viral

A Colorado college student's video diary during the time she was trapped in the Wyoming mountains after she fell down a trench and detached her foot from her leg has gone viral.

Lexi DeForest, 21, was climbing with her friend in the Vedauwoo Mountains, a popular climbing area in southeastern Wyoming, when she tumbled 8 feet down a dark trench after she tried to jump across it.

Her video diary, which she took while her friend, Erik Henry, went for help, is filled with humor, pain and a remarkable sense of calm. It has been viewed more than 156,000 times since she posted it on Youtube on Aug. 15.

"Oh, so this is me. I just broke my ankle. Eww. Second time now. This is me moving my foot and it's really gross," she said. "I'd show you more but if I looked at it, I might vomit on myself. And no one wants to see that. But, I don't know first aid for a foot that is not attached to your ankle, I am doing the best I can."

DeForest kept calm by speaking to the camera about her family, friends and Colorado State University, where she is a student.

"Shout out to Erik, thanks for taking me on this adventure. That's not supposed to be rude at all," she said of her hiking companion, who had left behind a trail of glow sticks as he went to get help.

"Actually, this was one of the coolest views I've ever seen," DeForest said.

Toward the end of the six minute and 40 second video, DeForest flags down Henry, who returned with the campground director and paramedics.

"You found me, Erik. Thanks!" she said before wrapping up her video diary.

A study abroad trip to Prague for the fall semester has been postponed, she said.

DeForest is instead preparing to start the fall semester of classes on Monday.

And after two surgeries, she is not yet able to walk, but can wiggle her toes.

"I can't even explain how amazed I am," she told ABC News' Denver affiliate. "Moral of the story is you can surprise yourself in the face of fear."

US 'insider' killings mount in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan -- A man in an Afghan police uniform shot and killed a U.S. service member on Sunday, a U.S. Defense Department official said, raising the death toll to 10 in such attacks in the space of just two weeks.

The surge in violence by Afghan allies against their international partners has raised doubts about the ability of the two forces to work together at a key transition time. Afghan forces are expected to take over security for the country by the end of 2014, when the majority of international combat forces are scheduled to leave.

On the other side, a coalition airstrike killed dozens of Taliban militants, including one of their leaders, officials said.

The U.S. defense official in Washington discussed the matter on condition of anyonymity because the official notification process had not been completed.

On Saturday Defense Secretary Leon Panetta called Afghan President Hamid Karzai to encourage him to work with U.S. commanders to ensure more rigorous vetting of Afghan recruits.

NBC's Atia Abawai explains what's behind the worsening attacks on U.S. military personnel by Afghan security and military to NBC's Andrea Mitchell.

Panetta also urged Karzai during the telephone call to work with NATO to boost counterintelligence efforts and speak more to village elders who have ties to the army and police, the Pentagon said in a statement.

"They expressed shared concern over this issue and agreed that American and Afghan officials should work even more closely together to minimize the potential" for future attacks, it added.?

Few details were immediately available about Sunday's killing of a coalition member in southern Afghanistan. NATO said only that they and Afghan authorities were investigating. Afghan officials could not be reached for comment.

What's leading Afghan troops to turn on coalition forces?

The Taliban have been actively recruiting members of the Afghan security forces, saying in a statement last week that they considered these turncoat attacks a major part of their strategy against international forces.

Once an anomaly, these attacks have been climbing in recent months. There have been 30 such attacks so far this year, up from 11 in 2011.

US forces in Afghanistan ordered to keep weapons loaded at all times

On Friday it was disclosed that U.S. troops have been ordered to carry loaded weapons at all times in Afghanistan, even when they are on their bases. The order was a precaution against such insider attacks.

Ramadan attacks
The monthlong Ramadan fasting period that ended Sunday has been particularly violent. The Eid al-Fitr holiday on Sunday continued the trend.

Insurgents killed two pairs of brothers with links to the government as well as three NATO service members in three separate attacks.

In the first attack, a bomb hidden in a cemetery in the southern province of Helmand killed a police chief and his brother who were visiting a family grave for the holiday.

Seven of the men's family members were wounded in the early-morning blast in the provincial capital of Lashkar Gah, said the Helmand deputy police chief, Ghulam Rabbani.

No one claimed responsibility, but the attack was consistent with the Taliban's strategy to target authorities and others who align themselves with the government or international forces.

The two men were brothers of a lawmaker for Helmand province, Abdulwadood Popal, who was not at the cemetery at the time of the blast. The family was visiting the grave after attending a morning prayer service for the holiday, which ends the month-long Ramadan fasting period.

More than ten years after the beginning of the war, Afghanistan faces external pressure to reform as well as ongoing internal conflicts.

Later in the western Farah province, gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on the car of an intelligence service official as he was driving home from a family visit, killing him and his brother, who worked for the customs service.

Another relative was wounded, provincial deputy police chief Ghulam Ghows Malyar said.

In central Afghanistan, three NATO service members were killed when a vehicle struck a roadside bomb, officials said. Bamiyan Gov. Habiba Sarabi said the blast went off in Kohmard district while the troops were out on patrol.

NATO forces confirmed that three coalition service members were killed in a bombing, but did not provide their nationalities or other details.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement.

Including Sunday's deaths, at least 41 international troops have been killed so far this month in Afghanistan.

Renowned pet journalist's special cat inspired fund to find solution to ...

Steve Dale is one of the most dedicated champions of cats, cat health and cat behavior you?ll ever encounter. He is one of the co-founders of the CATalyst Council, a member of the board of directors of the Winn Feline Foundation, the American Humane Association, and the Tree House Humane Society, a cat shelter in Chicago. This pet expert, writer, radio and tv personality and cat lover extraordinaire is passionate about cats? health and happiness.

Steve?s passion for cat health extends into many areas, but one particularly close to his heart, no pun intended,?is feline heart disease, specifically, feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or HCM. HCM is the most common form of heart disease in cats. It is also the number one killer of cats between the ages of 1 and 10, and, according to Steve, could well be the number one cause of death in cats overall.

At a?recent symposium hosted by the Winn Feline Foundation, a leader in funding cat health research projects,?Dr. Leslie Lyons of the University of California at Davis and Dr. John Rush of the Cummings?School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University presented the most recent information on this feline disease. I asked Steve to summarize what he learned.

?There?s good news and bad news,? said Steve. The good news is that there is now a genetic test available for Maine Coon and Ragdoll cats, two breeds that are genetically predisposed to HCM. A simple cheek swab can identify whether a cat has the genetic defect. Armed with this knowledge,?responsible breeders could potentially be at the forefront of eventually eradicating the?disease from these breeds. However, not all cats are Maine Coon or Ragdoll cats. Even though the disease is more prevalent in some breeds, it does affect all cats, and more research is needed to find out why that is the case.

Another piece of good news is a new blood?test which can help detect HCM early. The Cardiopet ProBNP test can differentiate between something that looks like heart disease, such as upper respiratory illness or feline heartworm disease, and actual heart disease.

The bad news is that there?s still a long way to go. Even though a recent report issued by Banfield Hospitals on The State of Pet Health states that the incidence of HCM in cats has declined by 14% since 2007, Steve is not sure how significant this number is. The report tracks data received from more than 800 veterinary hospitals across the US, but veterinary visits for cats have declined over the? past few years, which may skew the data. Additionally, the report does not take outdoor cats into account.

Drug therapy for HCM, while available, is helpful in providing better quality of life, but it does not cure the disease, and that?s just not good enough for Steve. ?I want something that makes these cats better.?

Why is Steve so passionate about finding a cure for HCM? It?s all due to a little Devon Rex named Ricky. Ricky was one of these special cats that leave huge paw prints on the hearts of their humans. ?We had an amazing bond,? said Steve. ?When people ask me about which of my pets was the most special pet, they always expect the answer to be something like ?Lassie?. Well, if I fell in a well like Timmy, I bet Ricky would have rescued me.?

The special bond between Steve and Ricky began from the first day Steve laid eyes on Ricky. It only increased when Steve discovered that Ricky had amazing talents. When Ricky was about 6 months old, Steve?s dog Lucy participated in an animal assisted therapy program. Steve?s wife decided that they should do something else with Lucy to keep her from getting bored, and Steve said ?let?s teach her how to play the piano!? He got a kid?s piano, and began clicker training Lucy to play. She did okay, but it was slow going. One day, Ricky walked into the room, took one look at the piano, and started to play. Steve laughed. ?Why am I fooling around with this dog!?

From that point on, Steve took Ricky for piano recitals to local pet stores. Ricky was featured on several national television programs and on virtually every local Chicago station. ?Had YouTube been around back then, Ricky would have gone viral,? said Steve. In addition to being a virtuoso piano player, Ricky could also jump through hoola-hoops and leap across childen or dogs in a ?down/stay? position.

When Ricky was one year old, he was diagnosed with HCM after he performed one of his concerts for the staff at his veterinary clinic. When Steve saw the look in the veterinarian?s eyes after she examined Ricky, he knew?something was wrong even before she?pronounced Ricky?s diagnosis. Ricky he was put on daily heart medication. He took his pills readily, and on days when Steve would forget to give him his pill, Ricky would remind Steve by jumping on his shoulder.

Ricky?died suddenly at four years of age. ?He was?doing his favorite thing in the world when he died,? said Steve. ?He was eating.? I could still hear the pain in Steve?s voice when he spoke about Ricky?s passing.

In 2002, the Winn Feline Foundation established The Ricky Fund for HCM Research?in Ricky?s memory. The fund has raised more than $100,000 to date. Even though the fund has held up well during this economic downturn, it is close to being depleted, and more funding is desperately needed to continue funding research that will save cats? lives. Sadly, the reality is that for every dollar spent on cat health research, 10-15 dollars are being spent on dog health research.

Even though Steve will always miss Ricky, knowing that his?legacy lives on by funding research to help?other cats with this devsastating disease?eases Steve?s pain?a little. ?I would like to see heart disease in cats solved in my lifetime,? said Steve. He thinks this?dream is achievable.??It will take brilliant researchers, a little bit of good luck, and money.?

There are two ways you can help Steve fight HCM. Make a donation to The Ricky Fund (specify in your donation that that?s where you?d like the money to go), and help spread the word about the fund and the need for additional funding and research to make HCM a thing of the past.
