Space station trio heading back to Earth

Next stop: Earth. Three astronauts cast off from the International Space Station early Sunday for the journey home aboard a Soyuz space capsule, wrapping up a months-long stay at the orbiting outpost.

NASA astronaut Don Pettit, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko and European Space Agency astronaut Andre Kuipers spent more than six months on the space station as part of their long-duration Expedition 31 mission. Their Russian-built Soyuz capsule undocked from the space station just a few seconds before 12:48 a.m. EDT as the two spacecraft flew 250 miles (402 kilometers) over China.

The Soyuz is expected to land at 4:14 a.m. ET in the Central Asian steppes of Kazakhstan. As it backed away from the space station, Kononenko tested a new digital autopilot system for the Soyuz, NASA officials said. Cameras on the space station beamed back spectacular video of the Soyuz's undocking and departure.

"When a frontier feels like home, it is no longer a frontier; it has become 'civilization.' Those determined to wander must now pack their bags and move further into the cosmos," Pettit wrote in a blog post about his upcoming journey home. "Space station is very much on the frontier. It is only my temporary home, and now it is time for me to venture back to my real home." [Photos: Space Station's Expedition 31 Mission]

Throughout their mission, Pettit and Kuipers actively shared their space experiences with the public through Twitter, photos and blog posts. Pettit even penned a special poem, called "Last Day in Space," to commemorate his imminent return.

During their stint at the space station, Pettit, Kononenko and Kuipers also played host to the first ever visiting commercial spacecraft in May ? SpaceX's Dragon capsule. The unmanned Dragon spacecraft was launched to the orbiting outpost as part of a crucial test flight to demonstrate its ability to haul cargo to and from the station. As the robotic spacecraft approached the orbiting complex, Pettit and Kuipers operated the space station's robotic arm to manually attach it to the outpost.

SpaceX holds a $1.6 billion contract with NASA for 12 robotic cargo delivery flights.

Pettit, Kononenko and Kuipers launched into space on Dec. 21 and arrived at the orbiting laboratory two days later. The spacefliers began their stay as members of the station's Expedition 30 crew, but kicked off Expedition 31 with the departure of three previous station residents in April.

Kononenko served as commander of Expedition 31, but passed that title on to fellow Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka during an official change-of-command ceremony on Saturday.

Padalka arrived at the space station in mid-May with NASA astronaut Joe Acaba and Russian cosmonaut Sergei Revin. The three will remain aboard the orbiting outpost until September.

Later this month, on July 14, another Soyuz spacecraft is scheduled to launch three more crew members to the space station to replace the returning astronauts.

Syrians brand world talks on crisis a failure

The opposition and state media on Sunday both branded an international plan for a transition in strife-torn Syria a failure, as the death toll for a weekend of violence topped 140.

World powers meeting in Geneva on Saturday agreed that the transition plan could include current regime members, but the West did not see any role for President Bashar al-Assad in a new unity government.

Russia and China insisted that Syrians themselves must decide how the transition takes place, rather than allow others to dictate their fate.

Moscow and Beijing, which have twice blocked UN Security Council resolutions on Syria, signed up to the final agreement that did not make any explicit call for Assad to cede power.

Official Syrian media and the opposition Local Coordination Committees (LCC) group demonstrated rare agreement in slamming the outcome.

The meeting "failed," trumpeted Al-Baath, newspaper of the ruling party of the same name.

Syria "The agreement of the task force on Syria in Geneva on Saturday resembles an enlarged meeting of the UN Security Council where the positions of participants remained the same," it said.

The LCC, which organises protests on the ground in Syria, said the outcome showed once again a failure to adopt a common position.

It called the transition accord "just one version, different in form only, of the demands of Russian leaders allied to the Assad regime and who cover it militarily and politically in the face of international pressure."

Burhan Ghalioun, a senior member and former head of the opposition Syrian National Council, told pan-Arab television Al-Arabiya that "this is the worst international statement yet to emerge from talks on Syria."

According to the SNC's official Facebook page, he described the plan as a "farce."

Ghalioun called a "mockery" the notion that Syrians should negotiate with "their executioner, who has not stopped killing, torturing... and raping women for 16 months."

SNC spokeswoman Basma Qadmani, however, told AFP in Ankara there were some "positive elements" in the deal, although "important elements remain too ambiguous... and the plan is too vague to foresee real and immediate action."

"The first one is that the final declaration says that the participants agree to say that the Assad family cannot rule the country any more, and therefore the Assad family cannot lead the transition period."

"The second positive element is the agreement that the transition should comply with the legitimate aspirations of Syrian people.

"For us this means that Assad should go because Syrian people have already said that they want Assad to go."

Iran, a strong ally of Assad, said the Geneva meeting was "unsuccessful" because Damascus and Tehran were not invited.

The United States and European nations reportedly opposed the presence of Iran, although UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan and UN chief Ban Ki-moon had wanted Tehran to attend.

Opposition groups are to hold a two-day meeting in Cairo from Monday and are also expected to hold talks on Tuesday with Arab ministers in a bid to agree on a shared platform, Egyptian media and the Arab League said.

The Geneva deal came despite initial pessimism over the talks amid deep divisions between the West and China and Russia on how to end the violence that the Observatory says has killed more than 15,800 since March 2011.

Syria's neighbour Turkey, which attended the Geneva talks, scrambled fighter jets after Syrian helicopters flew close to its border, the army said on Sunday, hiking tensions following last month's downing of a Turkish plane.

Six F-16 warplanes took off from airbases in south Turkey on Saturday after Syrian helicopters flew closer to the border than is normal, the army said, specifying there had been three incidents but no violation of Turkish airspace.

In weekend violence, more than 140 people were killed across Syria, including 120 on Saturday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. On Sunday, at least 21 people were killed, including five in the central province of Hama, according to the Britain-based watchdog.

Annan said on Saturday it was up to the Syrians to decide who they wanted in a unity government. But he added: "I would doubt that Syrians... would select people with blood on their hands to lead them."

The United States and France both said it was clear there was no future role for Assad.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague admitted the deal was a "compromise agreement" as Russia played up the fact that it had convinced other world powers that it would be "unacceptable" to exclude any party from the transition.

Moscow is loath to cast aside its ally Assad, even as relations between them have cooled.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said: "How exactly the work on a transition to a new stage is conducted will be decided by the Syrians themselves.

"There are no demands to exclude from this process any one group. This aspect had been present in many of our partners' proposals. We have convinced them that this is unacceptable."

Solid Advice For Smokers Who Have Tried To Quit Many Times

To fight any withdrawal symptoms, consider exercising more. When you exercise endorphins are produced, which can positively impact your mood during the day. Instead of gaining weight from your decision to quit smoking, improve your fitness by replacing smoking with exercise.

Tell everyone around you that you have made the decision to quit smoking. Not only will this help you to steel your resolve to quit, but their support can help you when that resolve weakens. Tell them to keep you reminded when you are feeling the need to smoke. Let them know that you are trying to quit in order to feel better, and to achieve a healthier life.

Write down the different ways that you want to try to quit smoking. Creating a list based on your needs and goals is a great strategy for helping you quit smoking. Everyone does things their own way. It is important that you find a formula that is manageable and comfortable. Creating your own list does this.

Is smoking more attractive to you in times of stress? If this situation sounds familiar, you will be wise to actively seek another outlet. Try yoga or meditation to ease your stress in a healthy manner.

Proceed gently on a day-by-day basis as you work to quit smoking. Instead of thinking about stopping forever, think about taking it one day at a time. Sometimes having a shorter timeline makes things easier on you mentally and physically. You can always increase your goals and time horizon when you are ready.

Find a ?quitting buddy?. If you can find someone you trust to depend on, it will be much easier. Not only is it possible to make a support group of our own, you could find activities that replace smoking for you. You and your buddy can also share the advice and techniques that are working best for you.

When it?s time to stop smoking, write down a list of things that motivate you in wanting to quit. Every time you feel that you are on the verge of giving up and lighting up, re-read the list as a motivational tool for you to continue on your path.

Decorate a jar, and set aside all the money you would normally spend to buy your cigarettes. At the end of your first year, use this money to treat yourself to something nice. You might be surprised how quickly the money you save can add up to enough for a vacation.

Obtain the support of your loved ones in helping you quit smoking. Be clear that you need their unwavering support and encouragement, and that anything less could negatively affect your efforts. Let them know that you?ll be moody at the beginning, since your thinking won?t be as clear. It is not simple to stop smoking, you should always develop a support system.

Aid the quitting process by getting plenty of good sleep. If you start feeling enormous fatigue and tiredness, don?t fight it. Some smokers have discovered that sleeping can assist them in passing the time faster. As an added bonus, sleep helps the body to heal more quickly.

If you smoke at home, clean your place thoroughly, so it doesn?t smell of smoke. Shampoo your upholstery and carpets, launder your curtains and drapes and wash your walls. Your home will smell fresh and clean, and you will not be reminded of smoking every time you walk in the door.

If you smoke because you have an oral fixation, do something else with your mouth. Many quitters like to use gum, hard candy, or mints to keep their mouths occupied. Electronic cigarettes can also provide fast relief.

You can find a support group in your area for the support you need to be able to quit smoking. These new ex-smokers can be a valuable source of support when faced with the various challenges that confront you, as they have or are dealing with them as well. You?ll find not only support, but advice and guidance which will lead you to great success. Support groups are universal, as you will find there are many people who have quit smoking. Try looking for one online, or at your local college or church.

When it comes to smoking cessation, do not make things even harder than they already are. Cold turkey may not be the most effective approach for you. If you try this out, you will undoubtedly fail! Fight nicotine cravings with products like patches or pills. This will bring you along during early withdrawal and will help you quit more easily.

The decision to stop smoking can be one of the hardest things you do in your life. However, this does not need to be unattainable. It takes a lot of time and a lifelong commitment. It can also help to use your knowledge, as well as some great tips, to get you started. If you put what you?ve learned here into practice, you?ll be done with cigarettes for life!

Since Myanmar (Burma) formally ended military rule in March 2011, getting an interview with long-detained opposition icon Aung San Suu Kyi has been a sort of rite-of-passage for foreign journalists visiting here.

The Nobel Laureate?s recent winning of a seat in Myanmar's Army-dominated parliament and current high-profile European tour are being taken as further signs that the government is maintaining its reform drive.

But there are other signals that the country is changing for the better. And with those changes come new items on the visiting journalist's to-do checklist.

Over the past year, the Me N Ma Girls (hoping there's no need to explain the obvious pun on the country's name), a pop/dance act made up of five young Myanmar singers and dancers, have appeared frequently in the international media.

?We appreciate all the media who interview us,? says Ah Moon, a 21-year-old singer and dancer from war-torn Kachin state in the country's north. She recently finished a Russian language degree and speaks fluent English with an Americanized twang.

Successive stories have branded the ladies as emblems of cultural change and taboo-lifting in what was one of the world's most oppressive political regimes. The girls, perhaps wise beyond their years, seem wary of being typecast as some sort of cultural fable or clich?, rather than aspiring pop superstars in their own right.

?Yeah, we've been in a lot of articles, it's been great,? says Kimi, 24, an ethnic Chin from the northwest of Myanmar. ?But, sometimes it's like 'can we practice now?'" the girls say, feigning good-humored weariness, while gathered around a laptop in Ah Moon's family apartment in Yangon.?

In between pouting and posing for photos, and gossiping in Myanmar language, the girls peer over the shoulder of band member Htike Htike, a graphic designer in her spare time, while she works on a new album cover design. "I did the cover for our first album," she says.

The pay-off from all the coverage is a chance to go to Los Angeles later this year to record some tracks for the new album and take a shot at making that apparent quantum leap that has so far been too much for most Asian pop acts trying to break into Western markets.

?It has been very hard for Asian acts to score in the West, but they have a chance because the story is compelling, they look great, and have the right disposition for success,? says Daniel Hubbert, Chairman/CEO of Powermusic, in an e-mail.

When the girls head stateside, they'll record at Mr. Hubbert's studio. Musically, he says, ?I would categorize the girls as a pop/dance act, musically akin to a Pussy Cat Dolls.?

If that's the case, then the Me N Ma Girls have as good a shot as anyone at making the East-West leap.

After all, Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi, possibly the most famous Myanmar citizen, has been described as an ideal link between East and West, an Asian Buddhist speaking the Queen's English and the language of democracy and rule of law and who raised a family in Britain.

?She is like another mother for us,? says Cha Cha, 22, also an actress with 14 movies already released, speaking of Aung San Suu Kyi.

The country's reformist President Thein Sein comes in for hearty praise too. Wai Hnin, the quietest of the five girls, chimes in. ?Thein Sein is amazing,? she says, ?everything is changing now here after the end of the military government.?

The girls aren't getting too big for their boots or forgetting their roots, however, despite their success to date and hopes for the future. "We don't try to be too sexy, or go too far from our culture," says Ah Moon, adding that "we all still love our traditional dress."
